Cameron Payne is going to have a chance to earn a spot in rotation. This confirms something we already know, backup point guard is a huge problem spot.

This is why Payne will be given a chance to earn a spot in the rotation.

From Arizona Sports By Kellan Olson:

The worst net ratings on the team outside of Cheick Diallo (-4.6) are Elie Okobo (-3.3), Jevon Carter (-3.8) and Ty Jerome (-14.9!!!). If we add in the waived Johnson (-8.1), those are the four guys who have all tried and failed to become the permanent number two to Rubio.
“Certainly he’s not in a position where he’s earned anything with us but he’s got an opportunity to earn a spot in the rotation,” head coach Monty Williams said Wednesday of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 2015 first-round pick that he coached there for a year.

It's really only a small step for Cam Payne to become the second best point guard on the roster.

He only has to be better than Okobo, Lecque and Jerome.

Jevon Carter is more of a defensive specialist and shooting guard.

Just put up positive plus/minus numbers and he's in!

Ayton is comfortable with 3-point shot.

@cheesebeef

Some typical Ayton type comments.

Fans are going to enjoy him playing away from the basket shooting 3-point shots.

dude's got to put up or shut up. he's got all the talent in the world to dominate and make a massive impact on both ends of the court that leads to Ws. until he starts making that happen, he's Shaqtin' A Fool, AFAIC.

I forgot how much Ayton stories irked me.
So, really! Here we go again! With Oubre out someone has to pick up the slack. To go on a run of games, we need this guy to not only play well, but be dominant! He is saying how he is going to blow it up. I remember the first couple games when he came back from the 25 game ban, and Coach and everyone else was saying "Watch out!" I remember thinking, that he played OK. Nothing I would say was "Watch Out! worthy." They were saying he was pushing guys around in practice during that ban. I was expecting him to bring a bit more "Baynes" to his game. He is extremely skilled. Sometimes you just want him to dunk over someone! He will have a 25-12 game, and at the end of the game that is statistically great, but you have that feeling of, "Wow! I didn't know he was putting up those stats." Amare has the same game statistically, but it was like "WOW! That was a GREAT game!"

He needs to prove it, but who cares how he motivates himself? Do you want basketball or not? Who cares what he says, as long as he's out on the court and plays hard. Because at a minimum, he's a pretty good player.

Good breakdown on how Ayton is evolving as a player.

Unfortunately the article is pay but the YouTube video is free.

Also here is a snippet from a non-pay article by Andrew Lopez of ESPN:

He has also been working with Suns assistant coach Mark Bryant on his shot-blocking. Ayton said he was trying to block "every shot" possible when he returned from his 25-game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance.

"Even on ball switches, I was trying my best to press up no matter what," Ayton said. "Every opportunity I had to show my defense because I know everybody is watching me. I tried to prove everybody wrong coming back. It was a big chip.

"Coach [Bryant] has been on my back about reading defense, shot-blocking with different hands, how to avoid contact and just blocking the shot, how to not send it out of bounds so we can have extra possessions, stuff like that."
