This, exactly.
I was just going back to look at some recent trades. Guys like Same Howell got traded recently for a 5th & 7th.
If people are saying Kyler is only worth a 5th, they aren't paying much attention.
Is the team that acquired Howell paying him $80 million over the next two years? Because that's about what the team that acquires Murray will be doing.

It's not that I think Kyler has no value relative to a late round draft pick. It's that I don't think any team will think enough of him to pay him $80M over the next two years to find out if they can build a contender around him after we give up on doing that.

I'll say a 2nd or 3rd and maybe a late round pick.
Sone team will look at his numbers, which on the surface are decent. High comp %, good TD/Int ratio, rushing yards and think they can do something with him.

If your a desperate team and trading for Kyler - you expect him to be the franchise QB. You don't have a problem paying him - most teams do new deals for those types of players.
Maybe they can do that with Kyler and lower the cap hits/lessen the guarantees.

Why would Kyler reduce his guarantees?

Teams that could at least call Monty just to chat:

Raiders
Jets
Dolphins
Browns
Colts (if Dimes flames out down the stretch)
Titans (if new regime wants fresh start)
Saints
Rams (if Stafford retires and suffers injury)
These are just my opinions on this list.

The Rams wouldn't sniff Murray, there is no way McVay would entertain Murray as his QB especially when his offense is pocket QB based.

I still don't see the Browns even considering a QB either through the draft or trade.

The Titans are not going to give up on Ward after one season no matter who is the HC.

I think the Colts would be more interested in adding more weapons especially WR more than a QB.

As for the Dolphins, would Murray be any better than what they have now in Tua unless they just want to move on from Tua.

The rest of them are in play. I think the Jets and Saints would be the front runners in terms of interest. The Raiders only because their ownership is crazy enough to pull a move like trading for Murray. Smith was tough as nails last night with the pounding he took. Murray would have stayed in a fetal position on the field.

I agree from the original list posted those 3 would be the most realistic bets. But, are any of these three teams in a much better position to surround Kyler with better talent than us to get any better results? And, if they invest 2 years and $80M for the same mediocre results that we have gotten, are they really interested in re-investing big money on a long-term contract for him to be the QBOTF for them? That's why I'm having a really hard time envisioning a trade destination for Kyler.

Beyond the teams mentioned, I'd guess it would take a team like the Steelers if Rodgers retires and they feel like Kyler could keep them competitive. And, if the options end up being very limited, why would a team invest draft capital and pay him $80 over 2 years vs waiting for him to be cut and paying him less and give up no draft capital?

I meant minimize them - can't teams convert salary into signing bonuses to extend out the hit?
Again, some team trading for Kyler would be going all in. You are not trading for him to be the back-up or to compete for #1 spot.

You make a very good point here. I think it's more likely Murray ends up being released versus a trade unless somehow in the deal the Cardinals take on part of his salary which not being versed on NFL contracts I don't know if that would even be possible. By the way, I think the best he would fetch is a 4th rounder maybe a third but that is probably unlikely. A team may be willing to see if they could resurrect his career if all it costs them is one fourth round pick.

Here is some interesting stats on a 4th round selection.

Overall odds for a 4th-round pick

  • Becoming a solid starter: Approximately 8% of 4th-round picks become solid NFL starters.
  • Making a significant contribution: While only about 8% become solid starters, a much larger percentage (roughly 30% or more) will make an NFL roster and see playing time, often on special teams or as a backup.

my 100% guaranteed prediction:

The Raiders acquire Kyler.

Rationale: Chip Kelly is the Raiders OC. He is creative enough to design an offense that takes advantage of Kylers attributes and hides his faults.

Raiders have Brock Bowers, who will get the ball from Kyler a ton. Decent offensive potential with Jeanty running RPOs.

The Cards eat $30mm of his 2026 $36mm guaranteed compensation. In doing so, Cards pick up ~$17mm of additional cap space for 2026.

Raiders give a 2026 2rd round pick and get the Cards 4th round pick in return.

Sounds way more believable than the other poster here that said his buddy's friend who is supposedly an insider said Kyler would be traded to the Jets for a 6th round pick. I really hope the Raiders are stupid enough to think there would be any success with Kyler to Bowers when Kyler couldn't even take advantage of having McBride the past few years.
