The Minnesota Vikings’ training camp is underway, and the quarterback battle between J.J. McCarthy and newcomer Kyler Murray is officially underway. Murray, who missed most of last season with a lingering foot injury, was brought in after McCarthy failed to perform at the level head coach Kevin O’Connell consistently needed him to last year.

If the former University of Michigan standout isn’t able to win the camp battle, serious questions about his future with the Vikings will start to be asked. That being said, early reports are indicating that things surrounding his competition aren’t going so great.

“Talent-wise, right now, I think Kyler Murray is easily the best QB between him and J.J. McCarthy, but based on the early vibes and reports coming out of training camp, I don’t think the #Vikings locker room really likes Murray, especially Justin Jefferson,” Fansided Vikings reporter Adam Patrick posted on X on Friday.

It would be troubling enough if Murray wasn’t geling with his new teammates, but through the early days of camp, he also appears to be getting outplayed on the field.

Per Judd Zulgud, through two days of training camp (Day 3 was a walkthrough), the quarterback’s stats are:

Kler Murray: 16/22 in 11-on-11, and 4/12 in 7-on-7, 47 snaps.

JJ McCarthy: 13/16 in 11-on-11 and 10/12 in 7-on-7, 38 snaps.

#Vikings QB comparison stats for JJ McCarthy and Kyler Murray through the first 2 days of training camp, per @jzulgad:

Kyler Murray: 16/22 in 11-on-11, and 4/12 in 7 on 7, 47 snaps.

JJ McCarthy: 13/16 in 11-on-11, and 10/12 in 7 on 7, 38 snaps.

It isn’t an overwhelming surprise that McCarthy has the early edge, as it’s his third year in O’Connell’s system, something Murray is well aware of and doing his best to make up for.

“Every day for the last six weeks,” Murray said of his habits studying his new playbook, per Athlon Sports. “I think it’s a reps thing — continue to do it over and over again, say it over and over again, and the more you do it, the more you say it, the more it comes natural, the more it comes easier.”

The battle is far from over, but if Murray can’t figure things out on the fly and continues to struggle to mesh with his new teammates, he may end up wishing he signed elsewhere.
