Rams, Sehorn continue process of testing waters

By JIM THOMAS Post-Dispatch

PHOENIX - Jimmy Sexton, the agent for free-agent defensive back Jason Sehorn, is in Phoenix this week attending the NFL owners meetings. He spoke with Rams president of football operations Jay Zygmunt over the weekend.

Nonetheless, it appears that the Rams no longer are dead set on trying to sign Sehorn "ASAP" as they attempt to gauge the market.

Sehorn's visit with the Rams and former "nemesis" Mike Martz went well Friday in St. Louis.

"They got along well," said agent Kyle Rote Jr., who works with Sexton at the Memphis-based Athletic Resource Management.

Sehorn also has visited Carolina, Cleveland and Jacksonville. Other than the Rams, it appears that Carolina and Cleveland have expressed the most interest.

If the Rams can get Sehorn for close to the veteran's minimum, they will jump at the chance to sign him. However, if he commands something like $2 million a year on the market, which is possible, the Rams almost certainly must cut a player to sign him.

If that's the case, the most likely candidate is free safety Kim Herring. Herring is entering the third year of a five- year contract with the club. He's scheduled to count $2.7 million against the salary cap this season, including a base salary of $2 million.

However, if the Rams cut him before June 1, the team would have to absorb a cap hit of $1.8 million - so the net savings would be only about $900,000.

Herring would be the logical choice to go if the club signs Sehorn, because the Rams are more interested in having Sehorn play free safety than cornerback.
