But how many hits would he have if he wasn't on the Viagra?

At the very least you have to admit that he wouldn't have scored nearly as often.

Palmiero Suspended for Steroids

Source says Palmeiro will be suspended

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro has been suspended for violating baseball's steroids policy, a league official confirmed to Buster Olney. Palmeiro, known for his sweet swing, joined the 3,000-hit, 500-homer club this season.

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro will be suspended by Major League Baseball for violating the league's steroids policy, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney has confirmed with a league source.

Palmeiro, who recently got his 3,000th career hit, was noted for his emotional denial of steroid use before a Congressional panel in March, would be the latest player suspended under the league's new drug policy.

The image of Palmeiro taking a sweet swing from the left side of the plate has been replaced in some minds by the sight of him testifying before a House committee investigating steroids in baseball.

The hearing included testimony from Jose Canseco, who in his book cited Palmeiro and several other players as steroid users. Palmeiro emphatically denies using the performance-enhancing drug, but the Baltimore Orioles' first baseman can't deny how perceptions have changed.

"In my opinion, everyone that plays baseball in this era has been tainted," Palmeiro said during spring training. "Not just the people that he has named in the book, I think this whole era over the last 10, 15 or 20 years has been tainted. Regardless of whether you did or you didn't do anything, this whole era will have that label."

Palmeiro to be suspended for steroids; denies use

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2121659

Rafael Palmeiro was suspended Monday for violating Major League Baseball's steroids policy, nearly five months after telling Congress that "I have never used steroids. Period."

Palmeiro two weeks ago collected his 3,000th hit, joining Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray as the only players with 3,000 hits and 500 homers.

Palmeiro, 40, is the seventh and highest-profile player to test positive for steroids under the major league policy adopted earlier this year.

In remarks prepared for a conference call Monday, Palmeiro said he had accepted his punishment and could not explain how the steroids got into his body.

"I have never intentionally used steroids. Never. Ever. Period," he said. "Ultimately, although I never intentionally put a banned substance into my body, the independent arbitrator ruled that I had to be suspended under the terms of the program."

A grievance filed by the players' union against the suspension was denied.

Appearing with Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and other baseball stars before a congressional committee on March 17, Palmeiro made an opening statement in which he said: "Let me start by telling you this: I have never used steroids. Period. I don't know how to say it any more clearly than that. Never."

Palmeiro seemed in that appearance to be indignant over accusations made by former slugger Jose Canseco, who cited Palmeiro as a steroid user in his tell-all book. In an interview on the CBS television show "60 Minutes," Canseco -- who also testified before Congress -- said he injected the drug into Palmeiro.

Damn. Under oath. Now we know why he was invited to testify.

Some people think not getting caught in a lie is the same as telling the truth.

A lot of people bash Canseco, but he seems to be the most honest guy involved in this whole thing, as far as owning up to who was doing 'roids.

Palmeiro speaks

Statement from Rafael Palmeiro

Thank you very much for joining me on this call today. I am saddened that we are here to address this issue, but because of the importance of it, I feel the need to make a brief statement and address your questions. At the outset, let me say that under the rules of the basic agreement and the order of the independent arbitrator, there is an order of confidentiality governing the specifics of this case. I will attempt to state as much as I can and be as forthright as possible, but there will be issues I can't address based on orders imposed on me by the basic agreement and the arbitration process. I am here to make it very clear that I have never intentionally used steroids. Never. Ever. Period. When I found out that I failed a test under the new drug policy, I filed a grievance and challenged the suspension on the basis that I have never intentionally taken a banned substance. Ultimately, although I never intentionally put a banned substance into my body the independent arbitrator ruled that I had to be suspended under the terms of the program.
I am sure you will ask how I tested positive for a banned substance. As I look back, I don't have a specific answer to give. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to explain to the arbitrator how the banned substance entered my body. The arbitrator did not find that I used a banned substance intentionally in fact, he said he found my testimony to be compelling but he ruled that I could not meet the heavy burden imposed on players who test positive under the new drug policy. I accept this punishment and want to address it publicly. I want to apologize to MLB, the Baltimore Orioles organization, my teammates, and most of all, my fans. Given my role with the No Tolerance Committee and my relationships with Congress, I feel the need to communicate a serious message to my fellow players and to kids everywhere. All of us have to be responsible and exercise extreme care in what we put in our body. I hope that all MLB players and kids will learn from what has happened to me. I have never intentionally used a banned substance, but I unfortunately wasn't careful enough. I take my role as a professional athlete seriously. I love baseball and have great respect for all of the players who played before me. I have always done my best to live each day in ways that would make my family proud. Everything I have accomplished is the result of hard work and dedication to being the best possible player I can be. I feel terrible that this has happened, but I think there is something to be gained from it. If my situation results in the education of current and future players about the dangers of taking anything without a prescription from a licensed physician -- that is a positive. At the end of the day, it is important for all players to understand the risk of contamination and to be very careful about what they put in their body. This suspension is going to be incredibly difficult for me, my wife and my 2 boys. Over the next week and a half, I am going to spend time with my family. I am going to come back and will be as determined as ever to help the Orioles win this pennant race that we are in. We have worked very hard to be in a position to bring our fans a title, and I will not let this be a distraction.

Finally, I would like to thank Commissioner Selig and Mr. Angelos for their strong words of encouragement. I had the opportunity to speak with both of them and I am extremely appreciative of their support and friendship.

I see Rafael attended the Bill Clinton school of denial, with the use of the word "intentionally" thrown in over and over so he's not REALLY denying he used steroids, just that it wasn't intentional.

Bonds did the same thing claiming he didn't know the stuff was illegal when he used it.

I was pretty sure it was true because I knew Palmeiro was lying when he said he didn't really hang out with Canseco in Texas and Jose's claims of injecting him were ludicrous. I knew for a fact that they were in fact quite close for a while there before they had a falling out.

Anybody notice Jason Giambi's performance last month? 13 homers in the month of July? He's back on the juice after he couldn't hack it

Steinbrenner probably hooked Jason up. Couldn't stand paying a juice junkie the big bucks to die on the vine. Just win baby. :sarcasm:

Does this make the Palmiero for Mitch Williams trade lean maybe a tiny bit more in favor of the Cubs? :)

Canseco is on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch. Canseco said he introduced Palmeiro to steroids and growth hormones. If you look at Palmeiro's stats, he started hitting for power when he got to Texas.

Canseco joined the Rangers in 1992 and here are Palmeiro's stats.

Got this off anothe board but Raffy only had 1 HR in his first 100 ABs, but 18 HRs in his 200 after that. Sounds like someone tried to play without the extra help and couldn't hack it so went back to old faithful for a little help. I bet you anything Giambi's next unless Bud lets him slide so the Yanks get in the playoffs.

I'm so bummed...but all the indicators are there.

Especially this season when he started out like crap...but apparently rebounded into performing like his old self.

In the back of my mind I can see him getting back on the 'roids for a 'confidence' booster...kinda ironic since he's the spokesman for viagra...

Now him claiming ignorance on how he took the substance to me really shows he's trying to protect the supplier and other parties involved.

During his congressional testimony he had a chance to admit to prior usage...now its looking like Jose Canseco is a more credible witness.

On a side note...kenny rogers getting slapped for 20 games and palmiero for 10 days...wtf?!

Ryan Franklin Suspended for Steroids

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2122665

Seattle pitcher Ryan Franklin has received a 10-day suspension under the terms of Major League Baseball's steroids policy.

A day after baseball announced that Baltimore first baseman Rafael Palmeiro had failed his test, Franklin became the eighth player to receive a suspension under MLB's more stringent drug policy, which took effect in March.

The commissioner's office announced the suspension Tuesday afternoon. A representative from Franklin-Frye-McCann agency, which represents Franklin, said the pitcher would talk to the media after 2 p.m. ET in Detroit.

Franklin, 32, has a career record of 33-46 with a 4.19 ERA in six major-league seasons, all with Seattle. He is 6-11 with a 4.61 ERA in 22 games this season, including 20 starts.

"We are very disappointed to learn this news," Mariners spokesman Tim Hevly said. "But it's the direction of Major League Baseball, and, following its rules, we are not able to comment further."

Franklin was expected to talk with reporters later Tuesday.

The other major leaguers who have received suspensions for using performance-enhancing drugs this season are Seattle's Jamal Strong, Cleveland's Rafael Betancourt, Minnesota's Juan Rincon, Colorado's Jorge Piedra, Texas' Agustin Montero, and Tampa Bay's Alex Sanchez, who is now playing for the San Francisco Giants.

I just heard on the AM 1060 Sports Report that a source said that it was a serious substance and not something you could 'mistakenly' take.

I didnt catch the statement exactly, but I'll try to catch it next time it comes up.

The claim is that some supplement contains nandrolone(sp) and that several guys who have been caught are all claiming that's why.

The problem Palmeiro has is just like every NFL football player in history to test positive for pot claims 2nd hand smoke, every baseball player testing positive for steroids claims contaminated supplement. After awhile frankly I don't believe any of them, even if some of them ARE telling the truth.
