The only way the trade is smart is if an extension is worked out in advance. Awful trade.

I think thought it was bad with an extension.

Then we find out there is no extension.

Then Chase Young, who is 2.5 years younger than Sweat, gets traded for a late 3rd.

Poles got clowned.

On the plus side no way they keep him. This is an 8 game deal.

Niners are already about $30m over the cap next year. No way they can extend Chase at his market rate.

Although they have no major free agents.
According to OTC they are 1 mil under for 2024 but 45 mil in cap space in 2025. If that is accurate, I feel like they could figure it out with Chase if they really want to.

they could easily move $30mm or so from 2024 to 2025

that said -- their cap is uber-top heavy and the QB thing looms

Want to wager on that? If they want to keep him, they will.

He doesn't have to sign and can sit out. Plus, it'll be about $21 million to franchise him and they have a few players in line for extensions like Moore. They might have to let him walk if they can't extend others. It's a gamble.
I think the Bears have an insane amount of available cap space.

And maybe none of these guys were willing to sign an extension with AZ which is why the Cardinals didn't trade for them, but that also isn't great news.

Would not have been dumb at all. First, I doubt Young hits the open market. Second, if he does, you get your 3rd round pick back. Sounds like a pretty smart move to me.
Well, you get a compensation pick versus, as things stand, the #1 pick in the 3rd round.

So, moving down a round for 9 games of Chase Young in a lost year.
