This year does seem different because I have had audio dropouts with HDMI ports and have even changed the TV out as well so it should be the receiver. The CSR escalated me and said they were working on a fix. I might be canceling for real this time, after 10 years of service.

I just typed the longest post in my history and lost it.

I'm too demoralized to continue but it was a great story, it must be the DirecTV gremlins, they won't let me post the truth...

HA!!! wonders of the back back back button, I found it....

I've had the service for years, practically a charter member.

I've had autodeduct for years too and so they treat me well but I will say that they're idiots, complete blithering idiots.

They should be a case study in how to be idiots, along with advanced classes on taking it up a notch, you know all the things you have to do to elevate your idiocy aura.

"Getting it done right the first time" HA!, they scoff at such old fashioned ways of doing things.

I'll set the scenario here:

I notice on my bill that I am being charged for HD packaging and on some other stuff it's bragging on how many HD channels they have. I know that I only get about 7 or 8 HD channels and so I"m obviously peeved at paying for the HD and getting about 10 percent of what's in HD.

So I call, this will be the first step little do I know in a long and fun filled journey of discovery. On this journey I will realize to my amazement and my horror that modern day business has incredibly sunken to even lower depths of incompetence, something I had before not thought possible.

I get through, explain myself and am told that, well that's just the way it is, not sure why I wouldn't get them, here punch in this channel, hmm odd you can't see it, dunno should be on, you've got the best package, you're good.

Rather than arguing here I'm busy, I forget about it but never did I believe the person just didn't feel like arguing then.

A few weeks later I remember I'm pissed and call again.

This time I get someone who understands what I'm saying, correctly identifies that I have an Old HD reciever and offers me a new one, free of charge and obigation and sets the appointment for install.

The day arrrives and I get home after a 5 minute drive over, the dude is sitting there in my basement finishing up and looks at me and says, WON'T work, it's a bad reciever, sorry dude.

Knowing how stupid they can be and observing it's the last call of the day for the guy, since he mentioned this before delivering the bad news I catch on he just wants to go home and suspect there is more to the story here.

The reciever won't link up, I posit the question to him that I've seen newer dishes on the outside of my neighbors houses, could it be that one of those is required?

AH, yes sir that's probably it, let's go look at yours.

We look, he goes ok yeah you need a slimline blah blah blah, and as luck would have it I don't have one on the truck, I'll need to go now and you'll just have to call them at DTV.

So he leaves in a flash, I calll, I'm mad, they say oooops you do need a dish we can see that here, I say why the hell didn't genius know this and they mumble and apologize and pay me back by scheduling a new dish install over two weeks from that day.

I'm understandably upset, not mean, just hold my ground, it does nothing, I could of needed emergency surgery and they'd of held their ground.

So I leave it alone and resume my life.

The next day my kids remind me they can't watch tv, so I take the old reciever that the guy tried to take from me the day before BTW, and I hook it back up, and of course the one thing he managed to get done was canceling it.

So I call in they turn it back on, apologize some more, give me free stuff and it's all good.

Next day, it turns back off.

I call, they turn it on, apologize and we move on.

Next day, it turns back off.

I call, they turn it on, apologize, add more free stuff, we move on.

Next day, it turns back off.

I call, lose my temper, demand someone other than an idiot, this takes a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time, finally a tech I sense knows what's up comes on apologizes, fixes the problem, we move on.

Finally on the apppointed day the tech shows up, dish in hand, installs all the things needed, quizess me about the other guy, then mentions we're screwed because he dosen't have any AB blockers, I say no problem, I stored them, ah good, but we're still screwed you need a new multiswitch, I say you've got to be kidding, my head swivels and he finds one, he was actually a very nice guy.

Then when all is hooked up and ready to go it still won't work, bad reciever the guy says, he calls his boss, they confab, finally they get the bright idea to unplug the phone cord, hit reset then miracle of miracles I have a tv picture and all is well.

I really should of recorded all that was required to simply upgrade a dish, it was a comedy of stupidity.

How did you do that? It seems like the last thing they'll give for free anymore is Superfan. I called last night because my reception was off,AGAIN, and have to have a guy come and reset the dish, AGAIN. For all my troubles i asked for Superfan for free. This is the second time i've done it.The first time they gave me 10 bucks of my bill for a year and free HD for 6 months which is a greater value than SF. This time they gave me 6 more months of free HD and HBO free for 6 months. I don't get it. Why not just give the SF once and be done with it? It's cheaper for them.

You have to make them think it's their idea, therein, lies the game. Good luck.

If you are a previous sunday ticket subscriber with autorenew you can call the DirecTV customer service (customer retention) department.

If you hint about considering dropping sunday ticket they will comp the superfan (sunday ticket 100+ games in HD) and send you a HD Tivo free ($20 shipping)

Where were you when I needed you? As one who leases 2 HDVR, 1 HD, and one regular receiver and subsribes to football, baseball and many others they have a good idea I am not going anywhere. They did send me a card that said I was some sort of special customer and actually I do get straight through when I call them for what ever that is worth.

I was on the phone with them the other day and they told me about 5 HD channels I could have for 6 months for free and then if I wanted to keep them it would cost $10 a month. They are pretty good channels (theee are movie channels) especailly when they are free for 6 months. These are different from the HD channels you subscribe to.

You gotta haggle with them, and it also depends on which CSR you get.

Worst case scenario (if you are trying to get superfan for free) - threaten to cancel ST.

IF they don't budge, ask for retention.

Alot of it will depend on how long you have been a customer.

I called them this year and it wasn't too hard to haggle to get superfan for free. I've been a subscriber for about 4 years.

Rumors were flying that even retention specialists wouldn't budge. If you threatened to cancel, they'd just say OK. That's why I never bothered calling this year. If they're getting better at actually giving in, maybe I should call before the season starts.

BTW, last season, they gave me Superfan for free without me even asking. I didn't have Superfan the season before because I didn't have HD.

From what I've read on AVSForum, that isn't fully accurate. Many folks were getting it free, including myself. It's not too late for you to call them and give it a shot...

I just called and reiterated several times how pissed I was that I buy Sunday Ticket and pay for the HD receiver and all the DH programming but they dont include the game sin HD. Took about 10 minutes of him giving bogus reason why they do it that I kept refuting. Then out of the blue he says "you know what Mr. Heather your right. For being such a long valued customer I will just go ahead and give it to you this one time." I was in shock Then said cool thank you! You have to speak with retention though.

Here is the thing. DTV has gotten smart to people just asking for the retention department out of the gate. If you do that they already know what your trying to do. They might just say "OK". However, if you don't ask for Retention and just say you would like to cancel, they will follow normal process. If your a good customer they still have to transfer you to the retention department to process your cancellation request. They have instructed their regular CSR's to try to avoid auto-transfers to the Retention department and get you to take an offers the regular CSR's are authorized to make. I have read in some instances the regular CSR's have inferred they are retention when you call.

However, if you stand firm and continue to say "no thank" I want to cancel NFL Sunday Ticket, you will get to the retention department. Unless you are a horrible customer, they are required to transfer you to the Retention Department to finalized the cancellation. The Retention Reps are the ones that can offer the best deals. They are authorized to offer you lots more then a regular CSR. This year though I didn't even have to deal with a regular CSR. When I went through the automated phone system and selected "cancel service" it sent me directly to "Retention". That is a first. Every single year before this I had to deal with a regular CSR first. Not sure why some people go directly to Retention and others don't.

However, I did like I always do every single year and got the same results. Free SuperFan, free receivers and some other temporary free programming. No difference at all from the previous years. Just called to cancel NFL Sunday ticket like I do every year.

The problem is often people think they are talking to the Retention department and they are not.

Me too! Thanks Fiasco, I just told them I was a loyal customer and was disappointed to see that new customers were getting a better deal than I was! Sweet! I got Sunday ticket for a cheap price and Superfan for free!!!!!

And yes DirectTV has the worst installers. When we moved into the house in '05 it took him 10 hours (litteraly) to hook it up and it was still F'ed up.

This isn't a football question about DirecTV but...

I can't watch FSAZ when the D-Backs are on...what gives? I get that stupid "721 Channel Not Purchased" message. Its only when the games are on otherwise I get whats on(I tried the Twins game too and got the same message but FSSW came in with no problems, it was showing Sports Bloopers). Anyone else have that problem? I know I purchased the Sports Package and I don't want this problem when I try to watch ASU Football this fall.

That would generally mean the game is blacked out in your area. IE not a sellout maybe?

not a sellout issue - the NFL is the only league that does that

what you have is a "buy our premium package issue"

since the games are "out of market" for your location the only way you can get them is if you buy the respective sports package (such as MLB Extra Innings, NBA League Pass, NHL Centre Ice, etc)

That's the only way you can receive those games

As for collegiate games, it's been my experience that as long as the game isn't also being shown on one of the specialty packages - although one of my coworkers was assured this would not be an issue

here is a link to the ESPN Gameplan Schedule

http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPageIF.jsp?assetId=1800007

here is the DTV disclaimer on their sports pack

"Blackout restrictions apply. In accordance with blackout rules, customers who subscribe to SPORTS PACK will not receive sports programming outside their market on these channels. Out of market games are sold separately via professional and collegiate sports subscription packages. Click here to determine which teams are available in your area."

I finally talked to someone from DirecTV and they pretty much said what MigratingOsprey said, since I don't have the MLB Extra Innings package purchased the games are blacked out to me, it gives that 721 code sometimes other times it will just say blacked out. That kind of sucks but I'm paying for enough as it is I'm not buying the baseball package as well.

I consider myself a DTV price manipulation master, I have had DTV since it rolled out, have my vip card etc... Every year I have them lower the price, throw in super-fan etc...

I called today and told them I needed to cancel, he asked why after so many years, was I dropping Sunday ticket?
I told him, "You guys priced me out of the market, I can't afford it anymore"

I sat there for two minutes or so.. with a big grin on my face, awaiting to hear this years special.

His reply after a few minutes... "Ok Sir, I went ahead and canceled that for you, is there anything else I can help you with today?"

D'oh, now I have to call back in a few days with my tail between my legs, and re-subscribe lol.

I think after all these years of BS, they finally called my bluff. :/

Well, I called them back to re-subscribe.. After almost 45 minutes and a few transfers around the customer retention dept I ended up with:

SuperFan for free
and 50.00 off my early bird subscription costs.

This used to be so easy, now it's like pulling teeth.
I am still hoping that someday Verizon can pick up the Sunday ticket, Their service, HDDVR's and tech support is far superior.

My success story this season with DirecTV:

Called and complained about the enormous mark-up on the NFL ticket. Lady apologized, checked my account and saw that I was a good customer, do auto bill pay and they went ahead and gave me SuperFan for free.

I am so freaking happy with Dirtectv right now. I just called them again and didnt threaten them at all. Just said I called to see if I could get a favor after all these years. Lady asked what I wanted. I stated a free HD-DVR. She said ok not a problem and set it up. Will be here in 48 business hours.

Wasnt there some sort of grandfather clause that basically said your price for the NFL Sunday ticket will never go up from the first time you got it as long as you never cancel?

I got in at like 159.00 Now I am paying 250 or something.
