Usually I don't condone the fans throwing things that the players, coaches, were referees, but in this case I would have been prepared to do it myself. I was really hoping someone would throw a beer... or beer bottle at him.

I wanted the Suns to get up swinging. Jeez, there is no place for that **** in the NBA. The fact that Zarko has to miss around 2 months because of a cheap shot is stupid. Fortson better get punished royally for this. I hope Zarko can come back and not have any side effects.

I am hoping the word gets out to fans in other cities about Fortson. It would be nice if every game he played in there were a dozen signs accusing him of being a criminal and a disgrace, with extra booing every time he touches the ball. The fact that it might distract the Mavs would be just an extra plus.

Whenever these type of things happen, the offender always gets off much better than the hurt player. The most Fortson will get suspended is 5-8 games.

Unfortunately my Qwest went down during the game, but if the undercutting was as bad as people say, I hope some of Zarko's teammates had his back. I know the league is really strict now but sometimes I think you need a brawl to get your team to come closer together. It shows that teammates have heart and care about each other. Players can get much more pumped when they see a game as a battle instead of just a game.

Hopefully his shot is okay when he heals. I really like his game, so I hope he makes a full recovery. He probably will but you never know.

Good grief, another player going to see Dr. Purdy. Beth is the hand specialist that did the surgeries on Jahidi and Scott Williams. I would expect she's going to be working on Zarko tomorrow. 3 Suns players in a two month span.

Funny aside. When Beth went to the hospital to do Scott's surgery, the hospital lost track of him. No one could find him. Her words were "He was tall as a mountain and wide as a truck! How do you lose a guy like that!"

She's a great Dr. though. I had some work done on my hand in her office. I've known her since college.

If someone is going to take out Fortson, it should be Archibald. He has a nasty streak and minimal talent, so it wouldn't hurt to have him suspended.

I was at the game tonight. I was screaming so loud when Fortson pushed Zarko.

The surprising part about the fans:

More than half the stadium had left before the foul. In fact, most people had walked out during the previous time out since there was only 4 minutes left and we were up by 24ish.

If the arena had still been full it would have been much louder.

I am still so pissed about it

SUNS FORWARD ZARKO CABARKAPA (17 pts, 9 rebs):

(Through translator) “The whole team played really good, they had a strong and intense game. Plus, I feel good about my game tonight, there are some things that were unexpected that happened that I could never have expected. I got hurt and that’s basketball. It happens all of the time. I did see (Danny) Fortson coming and saw him push me, but it is a part of basketball and those things happen.”

That is Zarko's post game quote. I emailed the suns asking for an email address for fans to send messages to Zarko. Ill post it up if I get a reply.

I really hope Zarko can come back from this and not have wrist problems for the rest of his career. I think this could really affect him both physically and mentally for a long time. I remember when Marion was undercut by Starks that he didn't jump high for a rebound or dunk for a long time and seemed to play hesitant. Hopefully, Zarko will be able to recover quickly and not have cronic wrist problems or arthritis in his wrist. It would be great is he takes the next 6-8 weeks and spend every day with the assistant coaches working on his game, watching game tape, dribbling and shooting with his left hand and basically just work on any flaws in his game.

He had a very good response in the post-game which was much classier than what most players would have said (or wanted to say). I would've been like "I wanted to punch him out but my wrist was broken."

Another thing, did Fortson actually apologize? In the game recap it says that Don Nelson apologized to the Suns, but I haven't seen anything about Fortson apologizing to Zarko, the Suns organization or the fans.

It would be wise for Cabarkapa to work on his lefthanded game while his right hand is in a cast. I remember hearing that is how Tom Chambers became so good with his left hand game.

Before leaving, Fortson said he apologized to Cabarkapa.

"I had no evil intent," he said.

Cabarkapa was in tears in the Suns' dressing room, but later composed himself and said through a translator, "I can't comprehend it. I don't know exactly what happened. I just know I was trying to drive to the basket and Fortson pushed me."

Fortson had no evil intent my ass. You're down by freaking 30 points, and you push somebody with both hands while he's going up. No evil intent.

I think he will heal fine, he is young.

But I do wonder if it will be in his head. Zarko's aggresive play is what makes him so good.

I do remember Marion playing scared for along time after that fall.

But I think Zarko is alot tuffer than Marion. Hopefully he will be ok.

Game recap on Suns.com with more info and player comments and also some good leadership from Stephon:

Rookie Zarko Cabarkapa had both the best and worst games of his young NBA career during the Phoenix Suns’ 31-point rout of the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.

The 6-10 forward made his first start – filling in for All-Star Shawn Marion, who sprained an ankle in Tuesday’s loss at Denver – and put up Matrix-like numbers before going down with an injury of his own.

While flying in high for a dunk in the fourth quarter, Cabarkapa was shoved hard in the chest by Mavs center Danny Fortson and broke his right wrist in an ugly fall to the court. The 22-year-old, who recorded career-highs of 17 points and nine rebounds before being helped to the trainer’s room, is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

“I thought it was terrible,” said guard Penny Hardaway. “I don’t think Danny tried to hurt him, but he didn’t want to get dunked on. I think he kind of lost focus on Z being as high as he was and pushed him, and he lost his balance… But it’s bad to push somebody while they’re airborne.”

While Hardaway talked with reporters on one side of the locker room, Stephon Marbury sat down with Cabarkapa, who was holding his bandaged-up wrist and trying in vain to fight back tears, on the other. The Suns’ playmaker put his arm around his young teammate’s shoulders and shared a few encouraging words. When meeting the media himself, however, Marbury was not nearly as calm or comforting.

“Hell yeah, that (expletive) was intentional,” he said of Fortson’s push, which earned him an immediate ejection from the game. “That was a (expletive) play.”

Mavs Head Coach Don Nelson apologized for Fortson's actions following the game, while Suns CEO Jerry Colangelo and coach Frank Johnson said they would pursue a severe punishment from the NBA offices.

“That was just a flat-out dirty freaking play,” said Johnson. “Absolutely thuggish. He should be suspended for the rest of the year.”

While the Suns were upset over the flagrant foul, they were also disappointed at the thought of losing the good-natured Serbian, who has tallied 52 points and 26 rebounds over his last five games. The 17th pick in last June’s draft, Cabarkapa was feeling more and more comfortable by the game after missing most of training camp and the entire preseason recovering from hernia surgery.

“He was good, man,” said guard Joe Johnson of Cabarkapa’s performance Wednesday night. “He came out and played a great game. He knocked down shots, big shots at that. He was rebounding, playing good defense. He did everything that we could’ve asked him to do.

“You know, stuff like that happens in the game. It’s the NBA. But I really feel sorry for him, because he broke his wrist. It’s tough, man. It’s a key loss for us.”

Cabarkapa is scheduled to be re-examined and placed in a hard-cast on Thursday.

Apologies

There was a huge difference betweenFortson's apology and that of Don Nelson.

Fortson said he had no "evil intent". Bull. Sure, maybe he did not mean to injure Zark, but he certainly meant to physically intimidate and hurt him withut injuring him.

By constrast, Nelson did not pull any punches about how disgraceful Fortson's actions which were unacceptable no matter what Fortson's motives were.

I've always been a Don Nelson fan and I am gratified that he did not sugar coat the thuggery.

I think Penny Hardaway put it best. Fortson most likely did not intend to hurt Zarko, but it was still a careless, dirty play. I mean he made absolutely no attempt at the basketball. Rat bastard!

If you want to look for a little bit of positive in this whole thing I really liked the way Marbury was apparently consoling Zarko. Marbury has really stepped up and become a leader for the Phoenix Suns.

Ill post more quotes as I find them

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban took issue with the notion that Fortson's actions are worthy of further sanctions.

"It's fine for Jerry to vent and be upset," Cuban said. "What Danny did wasn't smart, but he wasn't intentionally trying to hurt Zarko. He rightfully got a flagrant and was ejected.

"It's certainly unfortunate that Zarko was injured, but there is no reason for additional action."

"There's no place for that in the game," Nelson said Thursday. "There's no reason to do that," said Nelson, who spoke with Fortson on Thursday about the incident. "I wouldn't like it if it was against me, and I don't like it when the guy is on my team. The game was over. There's just no need for that kind of stuff."
~ Don Nelson

"It wasn't intentional," Cuban said. "He didn't try to hit him in the head, take out his feet, or do anything to try to hurt him. He pushed him. He wasn't going for the ball, so the flagrant 2 was warranted, but I don't think a suspension is."
"I'm sure Jerry was upset, but Danny didn't try to hurt anyone," Cuban said. "It was unfortunate that Zarko got hurt, just like it was unfortunate Dirk got hurt. The play happened right in front of me, and Danny pushed him, but he certainly didn't try to hurt him."
~Mark Cuban

"I want him out ... certainly as long as our guy is going to be out," said Colangelo, who called NBA senior vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson after the game.

Colangelo added that Fortson has "a record of being a thug. I've seen a lot of situations in my three-and-a-half decades in the NBA, and that certainly wasn't a situation where you take somebody down. Not when the game was over.

"[Cabarkapa is] a young kid who's starting to develop his game, and for that to happen is a travesty. No excuse for it. There's no room for people like [Fortson] in the NBA. That's not the first incident against him."
~Jerry Colangelo

"I just extended my arms trying to get him out of the way," Fortson said. "You can say what you want. You can say I tried to hurt him or whatever, but I know I didn't. The fact that he got up in the air, it could look like I did." "They expect me to do something like that, I guess," Fortson said. "I don't understand that either. But I have a lot of flagrant fouls over my career."
~Danny Fortson

After I have cooled down and taken the emotion of Zarko's injury out, I think Cuban is probably right.

The league can only punish someone for the action not the outcome.

The point is; If Fortson had done that and Zarko took a fall and didn't suffer an injury would people still be calling for 15 games or 6-8 week suspension?

If the situation were reversed I do believe Cuban would be upset and saying much of the same things Jerry said.

I am giving Fortson the benefit of the doubt that he didn't mean to hurt Z. However, he did mean to knock him down hard, that part is evident. If he couldn't put 2 and 2 together, Man running fast, jump into air + hard push in mid section going opposite direction = BAD THINGS, thats his fault.

A friend and I reinacted it the night after it happened to show someone how the play went down. I just lightly ran and jumped and he pushed me back very lightly. I still fell back pretty hard, I can just imagine how that must have felt for Z.
