On top of everything else, the Boston Red Sox have caught the injury bug this season on their way to posting an American League-worst record through the first 60-or-so games of the season.

Although stars like Garrett Crochet, Roman Anthony and Trevor Story aren't quite ready to return to action, Red Sox fans will be very glad to hear that utility spark plug Romy Gonzalez is nearing his season debut.

Gonzalez had surgery on his left shoulder over the offseason and has been limited to taking one-handed swings for most of the year. However, he was permitted to return to normal hitting activities at some point in early June.

That progression must have gone well, as the 29-year-old has not been designated for a rehab assignment with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday, Rob Bradford reports.

Gonzalez represents a right-handed bat that Boston desperately needs. He is also a plug-and-play scratch defender at nearly any position on the field.

He also rakes at Fenway Park, where Boston has been pitiful this season. His slash in Boston was .320/.342/.500 with 14 doubles, four homers and 26 RBIs in just 51 games.
