Reliever Danny Coulombe is getting closer to returning to the Boston Red Sox. The left-hander made an appearance Tuesday for Triple-A Worcester, coming out of the bullpen to give up a solo home run in 2/3 of an inning. He also recorded a strikeout in the WooSox's 7-6 loss to the Rochester Red Wings while throwing 18 pitches, 14 of which were strikes.
Coulombe landed on the 15-day injured list May 2 with what the team called cervical/neck spasms. The southpaw began his rebab last week with Double-A Portland. He made one appearance for the Sea Dogs, starting the game on May 15 and throwing a scoreless inning in a 2-1 win over the Hartford Yard Goats. Coulombe threw nine pitches, five for strikes.
Before going down, the 36-year-old had made 12 appearances for the Red Sox this season. And it hadn't exactly gone well, giving up five runs in eight innings of work, giving him an unsightly (and career worst) 5.63 ERA.
The Red Sox signed Coulombe in March. The journeyman reliever split the 2025 season with the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers.
His previous big-league stops include the Baltimore Orioles (2023-24), Twins (2020-22), A's (2015-18) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2014-15). Coulobme also played in the minors in 2019 for the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers. The 12-year MLB veteran has a 3.41 ERA in 355 career appearances.
Where he fits in with the Red Sox after completing his rehab remains to be seen. Boston's 3.03 bullpen ERA is No. 2 in the majors. Its bullpen WHIP (1.16) is No. 3 and its opponents' batting average (.217) is No. 5.
The Red Sox bullpen is anchored by closer Aroldis Chapman, who's tied for third in the American League with 11 saves and right-hander Garrett Whitlock, who's tied for fourth in the AL with nine holds.
