The Boston Red Sox's bullpen is almost at full strength as one of the team's top relievers nears a return from injury.
The Red Sox's bullpen has been one of the strongest units in baseball this season, boasting a 3.03 bullpen ERA, the second-best in the league. Boston's bullpen is set to get a boost with the impending return of six-year veteran reliever Garrett Whitlock.
Whitlock, 29, was placed on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation in late May, last pitching for the Red Sox on May 24. The veteran reliever has been a key piece of Boston's bullpen for years and has continued to succeed this season, posting a 3.20 ERA with 25 strikeouts across 20 appearances.
After missing time due to his knee injury, Whitlock is reportedly ready to take a major step forward in his recovery and begin a rehab assignment, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.
"Garrett Whitlock will make a rehab appearance for Triple-A Worcester tomorrow, Chad Tracy said," Healey reported on Friday. "TBD if it’s a one-off or he makes another before being activated."
Though it's unclear whether Saturday will be Whitlock's only rehab appearance, it's promising that the 29-year-old is nearing his return to the Red Sox. The right-handed hurler will give Boston another valuable reliever who can make an impact in high-leverage situations down the stretch.
