Patrick Sandoval is approaching the two-year anniversary of his last appearance in an MLB game.

It was reported Wednesday that Sandoval will start a rehab assignment by pitching one inning for the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox on Friday.

Red Sox insider Alex Speier of The Boston Globe provided another update Thursday on how the team plans to use the 29-year-old southpaw.

"Patrick Sandoval is scheduled to throw one inning in a rehab game in Worcester Friday. Is that a prelude to working out of the bullpen or stretching him out? Chad Tracy didn’t have a definitive answer yet," Speier posted on Bluesky. "An update: Sandoval is starting tomorrow on a limited (20-pitch) pitch count, but he *will* be stretched out as a starter on a regular starter’s routine."

Sandoval spent the first six seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Angels before signing with Boston in December 2024.

He missed the entire 2025 campaign due to Tommy John surgery though and has yet to pitch with the Red Sox.

Sandoval appeared in two games with Worcester this year before suffering a setback in April.
