A former New York Yankees pitcher is allegedly displeased with the Boston Red Sox's actions during a spring training game.

More than a full year after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Gerrit Cole returned to make his spring training debut on Wednesday. The Yankees ace pitched a scoreless inning in a 1-0 win over the Red Sox in a matchup that saw Connelly Early yield one hit over five scoreless frames.

Boston quickly made Cole work at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Red Sox outfielder Braiden Ward successfully bunted for a base hit that a diving Cole couldn't field in time on his first pitch.

WFAN radio host Tiki Barber said he reached out to CC Sabathia about the situation. The former New York Giants running back shared the Hall of Famer's blunt assessment on Thursday.

"CC's response: 'Kind of trash. They definitely talked about it before the game,'" Barber relayed.

Barber asked if Sabathia meant that Red Sox manager Alex Cora directed Ward to bunt on Cole. The pitcher clarified that he was referring to a teammate making the suggestion.

Ward has utilized his speed against everyone this spring. The 27-year-old followed the bunt single by stealing his 19th base, extending a Grapefruit League record.

Despite the leadoff baserunner, Cole escaped the inning in just 10 pitches. Austin Wells threw out Ward trying to steal third base before Red Sox catcher Jason Delay recorded his first of three hits in Wednesday's game.

Cole didn't seem to mind Ward's bunt. Per MLB.com's Bryan Hoch, the 35-year-old joked about needing the defensive reps after missing fielding practice.

"It surprised me, but it was a good challenge," Cole said. "I ended up getting my work in, so it was all good."
