The Boston Red Sox took a massive step in the right direction with their four-game sweep of the New York Yankees.
With mounting pressure to turn this season around, especially before the looming trade deadline, the Red Sox put together arguably their best series win of the season. Boston closed out New York in a 5-4 extra-innings win backed by a Sonny Gray masterclass performance.
Gray threw 7 1/3 shutout innings on Sunday, allowing just one hit and one run while fanning nine batters in possibly his best outing since joining the Red Sox this offseason. The three-time All-Star has been excellent this season, boasting a 9-1 record with a 2.69 ERA.
The atmosphere at Fenway Park was electric with how well Gray was performing, especially against the Red Sox's bitter rivals. After Sunday's game, the veteran hurler described the experience and emphasized how Boston needs the fans if the team wants to get back into the playoff mix.
“I think in the sixth inning or something they started really getting into it. That was cool. I appreciated that," Gray said in a video posted to X by NESN. "You know, I appreciated that. Then, I don’t know, I gave up a hit and didn’t know if I was gonna keep going, and saw (Chad Tracy) coming out, and was like, ‘I guess this is the end of the road for me.’ But I appreciate them, and it seemed they appreciated the outing tonight.
“We need them. If we’re gonna get back into this thing, we need them, and they were here for us this weekend. So, I appreciate that. Thank you.”
"If we're gonna get back into this thing, we need [the fans]."

Boston's sweep of New York brought the team right back in the mix for a wild-card playoff spot. Despite the Red Sox's 36-46 record, they are still less than five games out of the playoffs, winning seven of their last 10 games.
Going on a run now could make all the difference in how Boston handles the rest of the season, and as Gray mentioned, the team needs its fans with them.
