Arizona State To Hold Memorial Ceremonies For Pat Tillman
Private reception to be held Friday, May 7, with public reception on Saturday, May 8, open to all.

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State University is planning to hold memorial ceremonies for fallen Army Ranger Pat Tillman on Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8. A private reception will be held on Friday evening for the Sun Devil Athletic Family while a public reception open to everyone is scheduled for Saturday morning.

The private reception for current and former members of the Sun Devil Family, including players, coaches, administrators and staff, will be held Friday, May 7, from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the Carson Student-Athlete Center. Arizona Cardinals teammates of Tillman's are also invited to attend and pay tribute to their late colleague. Former players, coaches, administrators and staff who wish to attend should contact Anna Barber at (480) 965-3518.

A public ceremony will be held Saturday, May 8, at 9 a.m. at Sun Devil Stadium. The schedule for the approximately one-hour service is currently being formulated by Arizona State University. Speakers will include individuals influential in Pat Tillman's life who, in return, were touched by Pat Tillman. Parking will be free of charge around Sun Devil Stadium with both the North and South entrances open for entry into the stadium. Gates will open at 8 a.m.

"Arizona State University, in conjunction with the Arizona Cardinals, is providing an opportunity for the Arizona community to celebrate the life of Pat Tillman in a memorial service on May 8, 2004," said ASU Director of Athletics Gene Smith. "Out of respect for the family, we waited to set this date and make the announcement. We appreciate all of the communication from Sun Devils interested in this service. Please join us."

Pat Tillman, a linebacker at Arizona State from 1994-1997, lost his life on Thursday, April 22, while serving with his U.S. Army Ranger unit in Afghanistan. Tillman was the 1997 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year in addition to being named a second-team All-American. He graduated summa cum laude in 1997 with a degree in marketing. Tillman went on to play as a safety for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals for four years until his decision to join the Army in 2002. After his death, Tillman was posthumously promoted to the rank of corporal in the U.S. Army.
