The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived a veteran special teams contributor on Wednesday — parting ways with RB Trey Sermon, less than a week after he was elevated to the 53-man roster.

Waiving Sermon opened up a roster spot for rookie QB Will Howard, who was just activated off Injured Reserve after spending the past two months recovering from a broken finger he suffered during training camp.

Signing with Pittsburgh on a one-year deal in May, Sermon looked solid throughout preseason action but was released as a part of final roster cuts in August. Signing with Pittsburgh's practice squad soon after, Sermon was elevated multiple times this season for regular season action — playing primarily on special teams.

Sermon, a capable and versatile running back, would once again make a solid addition to the practice squad — one which also contains the newly signed CB Asante Samuel Jr.
