In the last two NFL drafts, the New York Giants used their top picks on edge rushers, selecting Abdul Carter in 2025 and Arvell Reese, who will start his career off-ball, in 2026. After drafting Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux’s role with the team immediately came into question.
However, after the Giants used the fifth overall pick on Reese in the 2026 NFL draft, they revealed they had no plans to trade Thibodeaux. Following the first round, the team also offered clarity on how they intended to deploy Reese in their defensive front seven.
Now, with training camp approaching and the regular season just around the corner, Thibodeaux’s name continues to surface as a potential trade candidate ahead of his contract year.
ESPN included Thibodeaux in its list of 2026 NFL contract extension updates for all 32 teams, noting that no extension talks have taken place between the two sides.
With Burns and Carter positioned as the likely long-term starters at EDGE and Reese available to shift outside or serve as a rotational rusher, it is difficult to envision the Giants committing to a second contract for Thibodeaux.
On one hand, the Giants might have been wise to shop Thibodeaux at the draft after landing Reese. On the other hand, they can still trade him before the season or at the deadline if the right opportunity arises. Thibodeaux showed flashes of strong run defense last season, which makes parting with one of their better run stoppers a complicated decision.
As the Giants demonstrated in their previous two Super Bowl victories, a team can never have enough quality defensive linemen — particularly pass rushers who can pressure the quarterback. It will be interesting to see how new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson deploys Thibodeaux alongside the rest of the talent in the front seven.
As he enters the final year of his rookie contract, Thibodeaux’s standing with the team — and whether it leads to a trade or a contract extension — will be one of the key storylines to monitor throughout the season.

Thibodeaux will play the 2026 season on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract for $14.751 million. He will do it as the Giants' third edge rusher behind Brian Burns and Abdul Carter. It appears the Giants are going to make Thibodeaux play it out. There hasn't been any talk of an extension. He knows it's a big season for him after two injury-plagued years. Thibodeaux has missed 12 games over the past two seasons and compiled just 8.0 sacks. This year will determine whether he can get the big long-term deal he desires.
