WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Mets have gotten a glimpse of the player they expected to head up the top of their lineup when they inked him to a three-year, $126 million deal in the offseason.
Bo Bichette has broken out in the opening two games of the Mets' four-game series with the Nationals in Washington, D.C. The Mets shortstop supplied a pair of two-run home runs on Tuesday and has gone 5-for-10 with seven RBI and four runs in the opening two games.
"I don't know if you've ever found it, but just got some pitches I can handle," Bichette said on Tuesday.
Bichette had been 3-for-34 with three runs, two RBI, five walks and four strikeouts in the Mets' previous three series before this road trip, seeing his average drop from .237 to .210. He now leads the Mets with 25 RBI following back-to-back quality games.
It was not enough for the Mets to grab a fourth straight win as Nolan McLean gave up nine runs (six earned) in a 9-6 loss. But they'll hope the top of the lineup, including Juan Soto who knocked a solo home run in the defeat, can keep pace with the Nationals in the third game of the series at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday night at Nationals Park.
Zach Thornton, the Mets' No. 13 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, will be making his debut on Wednesday night.
After some consideration about whether it would be to open the game or behind a reliever, the Mets used just two pitchers - McLean and Daniel Duarte - on Tuesday, clearing the way for Thornton to make his first major league start.
The 24-year-old southpaw enters the fray for the Mets in the wake of Clay Holmes suffering a fractured fibula last Friday. Thornton has made just two starts in Triple A but excelled, combining to allow three earned runs on eight hits and three walks with 13 strikeouts in 12 innings.
"I treat every game the same. I want to go out and compete," Thornton said Tuesday. "I'm an ultimate competitor. I'm a strike thrower, so I'm gonna do my best to just compete here."
Right-hander Zack Littell will be making his 10th appearance of the season for the Nationals, entering the day with a 2-4 record, 6.10 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. He face the Mets back on April 28 and gave up eight runs (four earned) in 3⅔ innings.
