WASHINGTON, D.C. — The mood changed in a blink for the Mets at the end of the Subway Series.
After a disastrous inning put the Mets behind the Yankees by four runs, the home side roared to life in the ninth inning and tied the game behind a Tyrone Taylor three-run home run. Carson Benge capped the comeback with a chopper up the middle in the 10th inning to score Marcus Semien.
Instead of dropping the series in dismal fashion, the Mets hit the road riding high on the heels of their fourth series win in their last five. They will look to extend that good fortune as they open a road trip and their four-game series with the Nationals at 6:45 p.m. at Nationals Park.
The Mets offense has found a little bit of a groove across the last two series, scoring 37 runs in six games, or about 6.2 runs per game. They will need to keep that going as they face a Nationals team that has scored a Major League-best 255 runs this season, behind the lifts of CJ Abrams and James Wood.
Christian Scott will be making his fifth start of the season for the Mets. The 26-year-old right-hander is 0-0 with a 3.54 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 4⅔ innings against the Tigers in his latest start.
Jake Irvin will be on the mound for the Nationals. The 29-year-old right-hander is 1-4 with a 5.91 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in nine starts. Irvin is coming off his shortest outing of the season, allowing six runs (five earned) in three innings on the road against the Reds.
