WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Mets have a new energy as they attempt to battle back from as many as 11 games under .500.
The kids are getting a chance.
Outfielder Nick Morabito, the team's No. 11 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, will debut in the Mets' second game of their series against the Nationals at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Nationals Park.
Morabito joins fellow rookies Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing on the roster. Morabito will be in left field, batting seventh as he plays his first game against his favorite team growing up less than 15 minutes from Gonzaga College High School, where he attended school.
The Mets enter the night with a 21-26 record and winners of three straight.
Carlos Mendoza said that the right-handed hitting Morabito will factor in the lineup decisions each day, spelling Benge or Ewing at times, while giving them another weapon against left-handed pitching.
He'll play behind another fellow rookie, albeit an increasingly-experience one, in Nolan McLean on Tuesday. McLean will be making his 10th start of the season and brings a 2-2 record, 2.92 ERA and 0.96 WHIP into the night.
Left-hander Foster Griffin will toe the rubber for the Nationals. He is 4-2 with a 3.53 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in his first season with the Nats, but is coming off an outing in which he gave up nine earned runs in 4⅓ innings.
