WASHINGTON, D.C. — There are a majority of factors that have led David Peterson back into the Mets starting rotation for at least one start.
The Nationals boast a largely left-handed lineup, with their two key cogs, James Wood and CJ Abrams, both batting from the left side. Beyond that, the Mets bullpen has been taxed in recent days with 12-inning game on Tuesday and a few abbreviated starts.
And Peterson has been relatively strong in his last three outings out of the bullpen, allowing four earned runs in 13 innings (2.77 ERA) with 17 strikeouts.
Peterson will look to carry over that recent success as he takes the ball to start in the series finale between the Mets and Nationals at 4:05 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at Nationals Park.
The Mets are looking to salvage a series sweep after dropping two straight games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The club's offense is percolating with some big efforts from Bo Bichette and Juan Soto in recent days, but the Nationals offense, the top run produced in MLB, has been equally up to the task. That makes Peterson's performance all the more important on Thursday.
