I thought I would do a little exercise to see the success of the first hired coaches in the hiring process. I have looked from 2020 and until last year (five just seems like a good number).
In 2020, the Cowboys were the first team to hire when they signed Mike McCarthy. He was fired after five seasons. Joe Judge (Giants) and Matt Rhule (Panthers) were the next two. Judge lasted two seasons, while Rhule got fired after three.
In 2021, both Robert Saleh (Jets) and Urban Meyer (Jaguars) were hired on the same day as the first two. Saleh lasted three seasons (and five games), while Meyer didn’t even get through his first season. Arthur Smith was the third hire, by the way. He was fired after three seasons.
In 2022, the Bears hired Matt Eberflus and the Broncos hired Nathaniel Hackett as the first two, on the same day. Eberflus was fired after nearly three seasons, while Hackett was one-and-done.
In 2023, Frank Reich was the first to be hired when Panthers did that. He did not make it through his first season.
In 2024, Brian Callahan was the first to get hired when Titans signed him. He was fired midway through his second season. Raheem Morris was the third. He was fired a week ago.
Oh, and the most successful from each hiring circle?
Kevin Stefanski got hired last in 2020.
Dan Campbell and Nick Sirianni were the third- and second-last hired in 2021.
In 2022, Kevin O’Connell was the last hired.
Sean Payton and Demeco Ryans were the second- and third hire out of five in 2023.
In 2024, Mike Macdonald was the last to be hired.
I think it is fair to say that you should not get super-stressed about the lack of news about the Cards.
