The New York Jets haven’t seen much of former Clemson star Cade Klubnik on the practice field lately, but that hasn’t changed the excitement surrounding the former Clemson quarterback.
Klubnik, who was selected in the fourth round after New York traded up 18 spots in April’s NFL Draft, has already impressed quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave during his first few months with the organization.
“Cade’s done well, Cade’s jumped right in. He’s very eager to get this thing and figure it out,” Musgrave said via the Jets’ official website.
Musgrave also highlighted Klubnik’s athleticism and the tools that made him an intriguing draft target for the franchise.
“He’s coming in every single day; he’s ready to rock and roll,” Musgrave said. “His Pro Day, he might’ve ran 4.57 so he can move…he’s got a lot of athletic skills and we’ll try to harness them and have him get good at this football thing at the pro level.”
The veteran assistant believes Klubnik already has a solid foundation as a passer as well.
“We kind of studied the grip on the football, he’s got plenty good grip, so there’s not a lot of slipping in mid-motion,” Musgrave said. “Those balls are not coming unraveled when he throws them, they’re not flying coasters by any means. He throws a nice, tight spiral and he really has a great skillset. I don’t think we could be any more excited to work with the young guy than we are.”
Back spasms have limited Klubnik throughout portions of OTAs and minicamp, but head coach Aaron Glenn recently indicated the issue is minor and the team is taking a cautious approach.
“I don’t think there’s a reason to rush him out there,” Glenn said. “Obviously he had the back spasms last week, and I would see him practicing more towards the end of this week. Again, it’s precautionary. Don’t need to force it right now, but again he’ll be with us at the end of the week.”
Klubnik enters training camp competing for a backup role behind veteran starter Geno Smith. Despite a disappointing final season at Clemson that caused him to slide down draft boards, the former Tiger left school as Clemson’s career leader in completions and pass attempts while finishing among the program’s leaders in passing yards, touchdowns and total offense. The Jets clearly believe the talent is still there, and Musgrave’s comments suggest the organization is encouraged by what it has seen so far.
