The belief entering the offseason was that the New York Jets would acquire two veteran quarterbacks. They went out and reunited with Geno Smith to make them their 2026 starter.

To date, Smith is the only experienced QB on the Jets' roster.

Jets general manager Darren Mougey then drafted former Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik during the 2026 NFL draft. The Jets will begin their first of 10 voluntary OTA practices on Wednesday, May 27. Klubnik will enter OTAs with an opportunity to win the backup quarterback job.

The Jets should give Klubnik every opportunity to prove he's capable of being Smith's No. 2. That process begins with the upcoming 10 OTA practice sessions. The Jets also have a three-day mandatory minicamp (June 16-18) before breaking for the summer.

Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe are also on the roster. They'll push Klubnik, but the real value is in the Jets' ability to assess him versus more experienced quarterbacks. If Klubnik looks the part, there's no need for Mougey to acquire a veteran backup quarterback.

The rebuilding Jets should assess Klubnik before the 2027 NFL draft. The chances of Klubnik playing during the 2026 season increase if he's able to win the backup QB job. The onus falls on him to earn that role, and the process of evaluation begins at OTAs this week.
