GREENSBORO — Southwest Guilford hall of famer Rosie Arnold highlights the 21st class of the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame, which was announced Thursday at the Greensboro Complex.
Eleven members were selected for the hall of fame class, which will be inducted Sept. 14 in the First Horizon Coliseum.
Arnold, a 1995 graduate of Southwest, was a standout basketball player for the Cowgirls in the early 1990s. A three-time conference MVP, she holds the Southwest girls scoring record with 1,709 career points and ranks as the all-time leader in assists (714) and steals (407).
Arnold also starred for four seasons at Georgia Southern, ranking second all-time in program history in assists (374) and among the top 20 in steals (138) and games played (113). She played one year of women’s professional basketball in France.
Arnold also played softball, tennis and soccer at Southwest and tennis at Georgia Southern.
She’s joined by Volire Tisdale Brown (Dudley volleyball/basketball), Bill Chambers (coach), Eric Ebron (Smith football), Joe Franks (Grimsley coach/athletic trainer), Kevin Gehsmann (Western Guilford football/lacrosse/contributor), Paris Kea (Page basketball), Jonathan McKee (Dudley coach/AD/contributor), Catherine Newman (Page tennis), Denise Ford Shipman (Grimsley basketball/softball/volleyball) and Stacy Weaver (Grimsley soccer/basketball).
This year’s scholarship winners are Emily Fisher from Ragsdale and Collin Auer from Western Guilford.
ROCKERS WIN AT CHARLESTON
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The High Point Rockers won 9-3 over the Charleston Dirty Birds in Atlantic League baseball Wednesday at Charleston’s GoMart Ballpark.
Ryan McCarthy went 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs for the Rockers (15-17), who scored five runs in the top of the fourth to lead 7-1. Ethan Skender added two hits and two RBIs, while Patrick Sanchez, Max Viera and Anthony Servideo, who tripled, each had a hit and an RBI.
Brayden Matthews got the win, striking out one in three innings of three-hit shutout relief.
High Point, which has won three straight, will next visit Lexington for a three-game set before returning home next week for a six-game series against division-leading Southern Maryland.
