WESLEYAN'S CROOKS WINS GOLD
HIGH POINT – Wesleyan Christian volleyball standout Nejari Crooks helped the U.S. Women's U19 National Team capture gold in the 13th Girls Youth NORCECA Volleyball Championship on July 17-25 hosted by Costa Rica.
The tournament served as the qualifier for the FIVB Volleyball Girls U19 World Championship, with the top four teams advancing.
Crooks, a Penn State commit entering her senior year, helped the United States going 4-0 – beating Puerto Rico 25-16, 25-12, 25-10 in the semifinals and Canada 25-7, 25-16, 25-20 to win their 10th title and third in a row.
SCOTT PROMOTED TO WEST MICHIGAN
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. – Winn Scott has earned a promotion to the West Michigan Whitecaps, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
Scott, a former Ragsdale standout who has also played for the High Point Rockers in recent years, made 13 appearances with the Single-A Lakeland Flying Tigers. He struck out 28 in 25 2/3 innings pitched.
ROCKERS ROLL PAST CHARLESTON
HIGH POINT – The High Point Rockers won 5-3 against the Charleston Dirty Birds in Atlantic League baseball Thursday at Truist Point.
Ryan McCarthy had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs for the Rockers (42-45 overall,13-11 second half), who scored three in the second one in the fourth to lead 4-0. Nolan Watson had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs.
Luke Napleton and Ty Hubbard, who doubled, each added two hits.
Yuhi Sako earned the win, striking out six in 5 2/3 innings. Kyle Halbohn picked up the save in one inning, while David Hess and Nick Timpanelli each had a hold.
HPU MEN'S LACROSSE ADDS ASSISTANTS
HIGH POINT – High Point University has hired Luke Shilling and Jeb Brenfleck as assistants to men's lacrosse coach John Crawley's staff.
Shilling will join the staff as an assistant coach and Brenfleck will serve as the Director of Lacrosse Operations.
Shilling comes to High Point after working at UMBC for the past two seasons. While at UMBC, the Retrievers posted a 7-5 record in 2025 and a 6-7 record in 2026 with trips to the America East postseason play.
Brenfleck, a 2025 High Point graduate, completed his undergraduate degree at Penn State where he played four years of lacrosse. He transferred to HPU for his final season of his collegiate career and earned his master's degree.
