Yep, I still think the guy is average at best.

He has a big offseason ahead of him that take could away some of my doubts of what he really brings to the franchise.

Unfortunately I believe you're correct. This is going to be a huge off-season for Mr. Graves. If he can get us through this off-season I just might have to jump on the Graves bandwagon myself. Let's hope for the best.

Fantastic news on Whis. There would have been a mutiny around here if he got away. I'm not as excited about Graves, but as long as his moves keep leading this team in the right direction, I support him.

Awesome!! I knew it would get done eventually and for it to happen before March was good too.

As for Graves....well....he needs to shift it into another gear w/ negotiations to merit his extension. I'm tired of seeing 1st rounders reporting late year in and year out and average free agent pull.

Michael Bidwill negotiates these contracts.

Mike Jurecki is saying that these deals got done now because season ticket re-ups are coming out in the next week or two and this was the best the team was going to be able to do on "good news."

I appreciate Jurecki's work and everything

but this really strikes me as needlessly cynical

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. The important thing is that the Cards anted up with the cheddar. Whiz is now in the upper echelon of NFL coach pay...for the Cardinals.

I dont understand how, but I guess I have no other choice but to accept him because I have no veto power :(

Whether you like to believe it or not he is most certainly part of the team that has turned this franchise around. Under his watch we have two NFC west championships and a SB appearance. We also have had more talent on this team then ever before. If you want to look at all that with a blind eye and say he had nothing to do with it that's your perogative. But your perogative would be flat wrong. JMO!

Oudtstanding! I'm really glad we have cohesion and stability going forward, along with a very solid head coach.

Thank you Big Red!! :newcards::thumbup:

Was he part of the squad that took us to the SB? Sure. Could we have done it w/o him? Absolutely.

This is not a blind eye opinion. Since 2002, we've only had one 1st rounder signed before training camp. Until Denny Green came along, the talent on this team was sub par. His resume is average at best. Now that we are a top-tier NFL team, we could afford to have someone with more experience, better negotiating skills and a bigger sense of urgency.

JMO, but I think he has ridden the coat tails of good scouting by Green and excellent coaching by Whis.

Hasn't Graves worked without a contract before, though? I personally would have waited until at least the middle of next season to possibly offer him an extension. He hasn't had to deal with a truly difficult offseason where one side of the ball is basically blown up (defense this year).

He's done well in the last few years, there is no denying that. He hasn't done much each year, however, seemingly pushing problems off into the next season or the next. Now, seemingly, the proverbial next season IS here. I'd have liked to have seen if he could handle it before offering him a nice extension. Now, even if he completely chokes, he'll still be the GM, because we're simply not going to get rid of a guy just starting a brand new contract.

Yeah, the guy was just getting slammed when things were going bad. (And I often participated.) It's only fair that he gets credit for the past two good seasons as well. I have zero problem with his extension. We finally have something in place in the front office that has worked, don't chuck it out the window NOW fer cryin' out loud.

I'm ecstatic about Wiz getting extended for multiple reasons and really just kind of blase with Graves extended. But I'm not upset about it ti be sure.

The bottom line, even for someone who thinks Wiz is the genius behind the whole thing, is that Graves allows Wiz to do what he needs to do. So if like Shane you want to point out the unprecedented success that Graves has been in the team picture for, I can't really refute that.

If some other "genius" GM came in as I have advocated in the past, there might be the proverbial "too many chefs in the kitchen" and things would get mucked up.

So in short, Graves's best quality is that he works well with the Wiz(i.e. gets the hell out of the way)

JMO! ;)

Apparently he already Merited his extension.

Do we have a Lombardi in the trophy case?

I would have waited 1-2 more years with a year to year deal to see how he handled this roster. I still think DG had a part of what took place in getting us to the Super Bowl talent wise & Wiz molded it together.

If you're a Pittsburgh Steeler fan, do you have just a tiny twinge that Whis is on this side of the continent? After their 'Super Bowl' slump, I mean?

Or is Tomlin the real thing, and he just had an off year?

I would have traded 10 years of losing for our 1st Lombardi anyday.

if nothing else this off-season, this team got Wiz in the fold for the foreseeable future which is THE most important contract that could be signed.

It's still amazing to me that he came in here and in three years, a) hasn't had a losing record in any year b) taken us to two division titles and c) TOOK US TO THE FREAKING SUPER BOWL.

How he's not mentioned as one of the best coaches in the league along with all the other guys is beyond me. We're the freaking Cardinals for pete's sake.

Gotta be 30 million in the first four right? If they dont take the 5th year option then there is no $$$.

I would highly doubt it.

Based on the rumors my dartboard would say average 5.5M for the first 4 guaranteed with a team option of 8M in the 5th.

Or make it 5.76 and 7 or something like that.

In any case, he deserves it.

I've got to believe that re-signing Whiz will go farther than anything else we could have done to demonstrate to our competition that we are going to remain committed to the quest for the Lombardi here in the desert. Thus, I believe that we have flipped the switch that will light the way for players, from around the league who also want this, to gravitate toward the desert. This was a much needed response to those in the media who have been cautioning that Whiz may bolt if we don't lock him up soon.

Next step-----some quality free agent signings.

In Somers article it hints that Whiz wanted, and got, final say over personnel. That would be a good thing. If that's the case, what exactly is Rod Graves's job then? Didn't they hire an assisstant GM to handle alot of contracts last year. Maybe they keep Graves around to be the whipping boy for the fans because, i'm sure he has one, but i don't see what role he plays.

I too like the fact Wiz has final say over player decisions
