SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Angelo State University basketball teams had the Junell Center rocking on Thursday night, as the Belles and Rams pulled off a Lone Star Conference sweep against Western New Mexico.
The Belles opened the show with a methodical 79-47 blowout, improving to 10-9 overall and 8-5 in the LSC. They stretched their win streak to five games. The Mustangs dropped to 0-21 and 0-14.
Taylor Grona and Majik Esquivel paced ASU offensively with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
ASU’s Keniah Williams is now six blocks from breaking the all-time program record in her career.
“Niah’s always been that player that can be a difference maker,” Belles head coach Alesha Ellis said. “Her presence in the paint is something that’s different than a lot of teams have.”
The ASU men snapped Western New Mexico’s six-game win streak with a defensive-minded 63-52 decision. The Rams, who are finally getting healthy, have won two straight games. They’re 14-10 and 5-8. The Mustangs, who have been receiving votes in the Top 25 poll, dropped to 16-5 and 10-4.
Jhordan Ryan, Zyon Little and Jabarri Barry paced the Rams with 16 points each.
The Belles and Rams will host Sul Ross State on Saturday. The women’s game starts at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m.
