Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo is giving shortstop Geraldo Perdomo a rare day off on Tuesday night, June 2, and he is going with a lineup more centered on defense for the second game of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field.
Perdomo has not been out of the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup since April 28, when he was still dealing with a left ankle sprain suffered in Mexico City.
The club is in the middle of a 24-day stretch in which it is playing 23 games, so Lovullo has been trying to find a day to get Perdomo a break.
“He’s playing a really good shortstop,” Lovullo said. “I know what he means to this team, everybody in this room knows what he means to this team.
"It’s just one of those situations where I have to be smart about it and give him a little bit of a recharge.”
Meanwhile, Lovullo is giving Jorge Barrosa a second consecutive start in center field. He hasn’t started back-to-back games since May 2-3.
Part of Lovullo’s motivation there is a focus on defense. Barrosa, the club’s best defensive outfielder, made two good catches on Monday night, including a play on a low liner by the Dodgers’ Will Smith that Lovullo said had a catch probability of 6 percent.
“Those are the types of things we know he can do,” Lovullo said. “That’s been his carry tool throughout his whole career. Hitting at this level is hard, especially when you’re not playing every day. The one part of his game that, for me, needs to be consistent is that version of him going out and making those types of plays.”
Barrosa is hitting just .170/.247/.330 through 99 plate appearances.
