Dealing with tightness in both his hamstring and lower back, second baseman Ketel Marte is out of the Diamondbacks’ lineup on Wednesday, June 3, a situation that manager Torey Lovullo described as a one-day rest to avoid the risk of a serious injury.
“When he gets to this level, there’s a chance he could break and we’re going to miss him for weeks instead of a day,” Lovullo said. “I will trade one day for two weeks. I don’t want to miss another player.
"I don’t want to be stubborn enough to say you have to play through this when I know it’s a very risky proposition.”
Lovullo said Marte was uncomfortable for much of the previous game. Marte did not run hard to first base on a ground ball back to the mound in the first inning, and also appeared to be in discomfort after fielding a Max Muncy ground ball in the top of the sixth inning.
Lovullo said he has learned from his time with Marte, whom he has asked to play despite not feeling right and watching him end up getting hurt.
“I have watched him limp back from first base in Colorado when I’ve asked him to play when I know he shouldn’t be playing,” Lovullo said. “Through hard experiences, I’ve learned, and so when he says or the medical team says we’ve got to pull back for one day, I’m going to do it. He’s too important to this ballclub. It’s just a one-day thing. There’s nothing that’s going to linger.”
Marte is hitting .385/.434/.708 with six doubles and five homers since May 16. Since that date, his average is tied for the second highest in the majors, while his OPS ranks fourth.
