Things was different in those early days of the Racine Cardinals. players used assumed names because pro football was not considered "respectable". Playing and training conditions were primitive.
For example, When the Cardinals played at 61st and Racine streets, there was no such thing as a locker room. After the game, the players would walk, still in uniform, to a tavern some three blocks away. There they would wait their turn to use the single shower head in the backroom of the tavern, then come out front. by that time Chris O'Brien had figured up the take and would pay the players in cash.
Things have sure change. Now the Cardinals have the nicest training complex and soon to be the Greatest Stadium in the whole world. Quoting the great Rod Tidwill "The Cardinals are a little slow ,but they come around"
