I think this indicates that they want an experienced DC - preferable a former head coach, Vance Joseph-style. That makes it fun to look at some candidates that achieve those requirements. I have not looked at defensive systems, by the way.

From my initial list, Jim Schwartz obviously comes to mind. I have mentioned several times how he and Ossenfort was together with the Titans, and actually he and Dave Sears were together with the Lions. Granted, with Sears as an area scout, but at least still in the same organization. Schwartz is the grand prize out there. For several years, his defenses in Cleveland have been among the very best in the NFL.

Mike Pettine is the assistant head coach of the Vikings, so they would have to accept an option to go to the Cards. He was once a head coach with the Browns, and was actually retained as a DC on Matt LaFleurs’ first staff in Green Bay. He has guided several top 10-defenses on teams that have gone to the NFC Championship game.

Leslie Frazier will soon coach in the Super Bowl as the assistant head coach of the Seahawks. That also means that the Seahawks need to grant permission to transfer to the Cards. He had a couple of defensive coordinator-interviews in last year's cycle, so maybe he wants to come back to playcalling, and maybe they are willing to let him leave, though I doubt they want to do that to a division rival. He was once the head coach of the Vikings, and has many years as a very good DC.

Oh, and let’s not forget that Ron Rivera had multiple HC-interviews last year, as well as a couple of DC-interviews. It’s not like the Cards’ interest came completely out of nothing, and I assume he is a candidate to become the next defensive coordinator. He is a great defensive mind, and his defenses (as an DC) were consistently among the best in the NFL.
Or Rallis will be forced on ML.

So is this guy any good?
Up and coming coach who seems solid on design. Giants were excellent on kick coverage. The Cards have been excellent on coverage but need to make a kicker decision on FGs. Several outstanding college kickers are available. Injuries hurt Cards personnel but the bones should be there to build a unit. Since the Cards signed a vet kick returner they should be in good shape.

Pettine was awful as a DC

Obviously ML likely has people he’d want. If he’s open to a wider option, I’d interview Clint Hurrt. The Cards need to develop their DL and he’s an expert. He’s aggressive on pressure and that’s how the roster has been built.

Hopefully not. I actually think Rallis is very talented, but I never got to like the defensive scheme, which I am sure he would continue with.

By the way, Albert Breer brought up Aubrey Pleasant and Dino Vasso as potential candidates. I am sticking to my guess of Pleasant and someone experienced as DC and OC, but I didn’t know anything about Vasso, so I did a little research.

He is the secondary coach with the Texans, who have arguably the NFL’s best defense with a killer secondary. Interestingly enough, he is a protege of Jim Schwartz whom he was with for five years in Philly before he went to Houston. According to Ian Rapaport, both Schwartz and Matt Burke (DC with the Texans) have been pushing for Vasso to get a shot.

Always tough to project position coaches to coordinator roles but Hurrt could be worth it. I agree that he has done well in developing the Eagles defensive front. Does that translate into DC success? IDK, but worth interviewing IMO.

Rallis isn't talented at all. Rallis HAS BEEN and COULD BE talented but he proved he lost his balls and can't coach to pass rush a pee wee football QB. If he could somehow get his balls back, sure, he can be talented again. He ain't talented right now, though.

Dominic Zvada was my daughters friend from grade school/high school and has been the kicker for Michigan the last couple of years. Out of curiosity, have you heard anything about him regarding potentially getting a chance in the NFL?

Honestly I think guys we interviewed for HC are beneath coming back as a DC. It’s offensive. Had they never interviewed him I think we would have had a much higher chance of landing him. Same reason Raheem Morris wasn’t coming here. I’m telling you ego plays a role…it honestly would for me. “Oh I’m not good enough to lead your organization but you want me to run this little dept over here for you? I see.”
I have to disagree. Once you have failed to secure a HC position, the next highest paid jobs are coordinator positions. As a player or coach, if you don’t leave your ego at the door, you won’t be in the NFL for long.

No, he was not. He had bad years like almost anyone (including Bradley), but he would bring pretty much the same as Bradley.
I don't think Bradley is very good either. Pettine is so traditional using his DL. You can argue he got the least out of Gary and Clark when he was in GB.

The other negative (potentially) is that he only held Shanahan under 30 pts once in the 4 times they faced off. The one time he held them under, Nick Mullens was their QB.

I am also a fan of Vasso.

did lafleur already have his guys in mind when he sat down with monti or just theoretically
Most of the time, the HC interview will result in who they have in mind or lined up for a staff. That's why they moved so quick on ST coach. He was available, and had a prior relationship with LeFleur. It's an advantage of hiring someone who has been in the league for awhile and worked for several teams.

Most definitely! If you are interviewing for a HC job you will have a list along with a contingency list for a potential staff.
Potential issues are...

1 - If Monti has guys he wants...

2 - What sort of budget Bidwill gives him for staff.

I have no way of knowing why, but it was glaring to me (and I mentioned it in several posts) how small and inexperienced Gannon's staff was. Whose choice was that and/or why? It could have been Gannon but it could have been Bidwill.

I don't know about staff size but I do know that Gannon brought in his guys. MB had made some verbal commitments to a few of the old staff members to keep them around before Gannon was hired.
