NYG were 27th in special teams DVOA but I don’t think a good special teams coach really moves the needle much.

After spinning our wheels the last 3 years with a coaching staff with ZERO NFL head coaching experience, you would think the team would have learned that it's actually good to have someone around who has done it before - especially if your head coach has zero experience!
we either get a crappy head coach with experience or take a shot on someone like lafleur because the payton and harbaugh types don't do arizona

You misunderstand me - I'm ok with LaFleur - you just need to provide him with someone on his staff who has run a team as a head coach before. Not doing that with Gannon was a huge mistake.

Adding Asst HC to his title would make it job upgrade whether Browns want let him go or not.
Questions I want to hear asked at the press conference:
1. Why didn’t you guys hire Mike when he was here for his in-person interview? (They will obviously say “we had a process and we wanted to complete that process”…But still make them squirm and answer the question.)
2. Mike, what’s your plan for Kyler? There’s an expectation he will be traded or released. Do you have a preference to keep him?
3. The NFC West is obviously a juggernaut of a division. What’s your plan to be competitive in this division again?
4. Many pundits in the national media saw this job opportunity as less than desirable. What made you say yes to being the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals?
5. Monti, last year’s draft was all about investing in the defensive side of the ball. Now that you have an offensive minded coach, do you anticipate primarily drafting offensive players? (He’ll say “we always want to take the best player available regardless of position that’s going to help our football team”, but I would still ask him.)
6. Michael, you mentioned there will be an expectation for this to be a quick turnaround, and for there to be immediate success in year 1 with the new head coach. What does that look like for you and Monti to help ensure that vision becomes a reality?
7. Mike, the Cardinals expressed they wanted to hire a coach who could develop players. Obviously every coach has that same desire, but what does it take to have a staff who can actually execute that?
8. Mike, with your brother finding great success in this league as a head coach - do you anticipate leaning on him for advice? Would he be open to you poaching some of his players or staff or is that going to cause division at the Thanksgiving table?

Honestly I think guys we interviewed for HC are beneath coming back as a DC. It’s offensive. Had they never interviewed him I think we would have had a much higher chance of landing him. Same reason Raheem Morris wasn’t coming here. I’m telling you ego plays a role…it honestly would for me. “Oh I’m not good enough to lead your organization but you want me to run this little dept over here for you? I see.”

I think you're reading too much into this...there are only 32 DC jobs in the NFL so ruling out any team you have previously interviewed with doesn't really sound like a great way to remain employed. Especially for a "Rooney Rule" guy like Morris who has probably interviewed almost everywhere by now at least once.
Yeah I may be a conspiracy theorist on this, but I’d be interested to know if any HC candidate from this cycle agrees to become a coordinator for that same team after interviewing for their HC vacancy.

The Ravens interviewed Anthony Weaver for the Head Coach job and then hired him today as DC.
Thanks. This one’s unique bc the Ravens drafted him when he was a player and promoted him to assistant HC, helping him land his first opportunity as a defensive coordinator with Miami. I’m sure familiarity and relational/organizational trust played a role in his decision, but still a fair example.
I think this indicates that they want an experienced DC - preferable a former head coach, Vance Joseph-style. That makes it fun to look at some candidates that achieve those requirements. I have not looked at defensive systems, by the way.
From my initial list, Jim Schwartz obviously comes to mind. I have mentioned several times how he and Ossenfort was together with the Titans, and actually he and Dave Sears were together with the Lions. Granted, with Sears as an area scout, but at least still in the same organization. Schwartz is the grand prize out there. For several years, his defenses in Cleveland have been among the very best in the NFL.
Mike Pettine is the assistant head coach of the Vikings, so they would have to accept an option to go to the Cards. He was once a head coach with the Browns, and was actually retained as a DC on Matt LaFleurs’ first staff in Green Bay. He has guided several top 10-defenses on teams that have gone to the NFC Championship game.
Leslie Frazier will soon coach in the Super Bowl as the assistant head coach of the Seahawks. That also means that the Seahawks need to grant permission to transfer to the Cards. He had a couple of defensive coordinator-interviews in last year's cycle, so maybe he wants to come back to playcalling, and maybe they are willing to let him leave, though I doubt they want to do that to a division rival. He was once the head coach of the Vikings, and has many years as a very good DC.
Oh, and let’s not forget that Ron Rivera had multiple HC-interviews last year, as well as a couple of DC-interviews. It’s not like the Cards’ interest came completely out of nothing, and I assume he is a candidate to become the next defensive coordinator. He is a great defensive mind, and his defenses (as an DC) were consistently among the best in the NFL.

Why is this ALWAYS the go-to when we dont land a coahing option/HC/Coordinator/GM/whatever? Its kind of ridiculous. Yes, THAT is the difference.

I want Iowa's OL and RB coach. They were way better than their ranking and played Indiana tough.

Couldn't the Cards make Schwartz the assistant HC/DC as an upgrade to being the DC in Cleveland?
