After losing two of three at home to the Baltimore Orioles, the Boston Red Sox kick off a pivotal three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Friday night.
The two archrivals are heading in opposite directions this year. The New York Yankees have the most wins in the American League with 37, 11 more than the last-place Red Sox.
It's been a rough season for Boston, which has the fourth-worst record in the AL and has shown no signs of turning things around lately.
On Thursday's episode of "First Things First," Yankees legend Alex Rodriguez offered an explanation for the Red Sox's surprising struggles.
"I think the minute that you got rid of Alex Cora, the manager, I think he’s the best manager in the game, and Jason Varitek, they decided that this year is not going to be their year," Rodriguez said.
Boston shockingly fired Cora and much of his coaching staff on April 25, hoping to get the team on track after a 10-17 start. The Red Sox have not improved since the purge, however, going 15-19 under interim manager Chad Tracy, who had no prior Major League managing experience.
Would Boston have a better record had it kept Cora? It's impossible to say. The Red Sox made their decision, and so far it hasn't worked out.
