It's always darkest before the dawn. The Boston Red Sox take the field today against the Balimore Orioles looking to win their second consecutive series. A victory at Fenway Park would put the Red Sox in prime position to make up ground in the American League East.

Boston is in last place in the division, 10.5 games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox are 3.5 games back of the final AL Wild Card, with the New York Yankees owning a healthy lead in the standings.

That could change this weekend, when the Red Sox visit the Yankees for a three-game series in the Bronx.

Yes, New York swept a three-game series from Boston back in April. But that was days before the club fired manager Alex Cora. Since then, interim manager Chad Tracy (16-17) has stopped the bleeding.

The Red Sox have Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez and Connelly Early lined up to face Ryan Weathers, Will Warren and Massachusetts native Cam Schlittler. So it should be a great weekend for pitching. The Yankees lead the AL with a 3.31 team ERA and the Red Sox are 5th with a 3.78 team ERA.

New York also could be missing right fielder Aaron Judge as the three-time AL MVP battles a rib cage injury.

From there the Red Sox head south for a three-game series with the Rays. Boston lost two of three against Tampa Bay last month at Fenway Park. But the Red Sox could be hitting Tampa at the right time, since the Rays have lost four of their last five games and are 2-8 in their last 10 games.

If the Sox can hold their own on the road, their playoff chances would certainly improve, which currently sit at 27.2% according to FanGraphs.
