Last Saturday, the Boston Red Soxshockingly parted ways with Alex Cora and much of his coaching staff after a disappointing 10-17 start.

In the days since then, there have been lots of rumors, leaks and speculation regarding where, when, how and why the Red Sox reached such a monumental decision.

On Friday, Boston fans finally got the full picture from team insiders Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam.

In a lengthy article for MassLive, Cotillo and McAdam reported that team leadership discussed and ultimately made their decision to fire Cora on Friday, following the team's ugly three-game sweep by the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.

Per the report, the recommendation to overhaul the coaching staff originally came from Breslow on Friday and was intensely debated within the organization all day, with Tom Werner, Theo Epstein, Mike Gordon and others weighing in.

After reaching their decision by the end of the day, Craig Breslow, Sam Kennedy and John Henry flew down to Baltimore on Saturday to deliver the news to Cora and several of his assistants at the team hotel after that day's game against the Orioles, which turned out to be the team's biggest win of the season.

The decision did not come easily, but leadership felt it was necessary to give the team a spark and turn the season around. The report added that it was not due to a "bad relationship" between Cora and Breslow, as some have speculated.

As for what comes next, the Red Sox do not appear likely to make another managerial change this season and will likely keep Chad Tracy as interim manager. The article notes that while Cora had the latitude to make his own lineups and in-game moves, there is expected to be a more collaborative approach between Tracy and the front office.

Boston is 2-2 since firing Cora and will begin its first homestand without him on Friday against the Houston Astros.
