Would the replacement refs have been within their rights to throw a flag on last FG?

It's impossible to forget this crazy play from almost ten years ago to the day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_nFvKv9pwc) - where the Browns defeated the Chiefs, only to have Dwayne Rudd get flagged for taking off and throwing (very far away from the actual play) his helmet. One unsportsmanlike conduct penalty later, Morten Anderson kicked the game winner for the Chiefs and Dick Vermeil cried.

After Gostkowski pulled it, that beast Daryl Washington pulled his helmet off as he was running off the field, and also Feely, Walker, and Groves all ran onto the field with no helmet on. Could the refs have flagged these actions? If so, would it just have been "post-possession" and we would have simply done the kneel down after the penalty was assessed? Or is it possible that NE would have been awarded another FG try?

Other general thoughts in no particular order:

1 - Pass rush was niiice. Campbell and Dockett were really bringing it, loved Dockett getting Ridley for a 9 yard loss too.

2 - Rhodes made some great plays in coverage, and drew a legit hold on Gronk that in hindsight may have saved the game. F John Lynch for pretending that was not a hold. If that was Lynch's jersey getting held, he would have been screaming to the ref.

3 - I was originally fuming that LSH did not come out of the end zone on that last kickoff, but there really is not guarantee he could have killed 6 seconds on that runback. It's probable, but not definite.

4 - Yeah, Ray Horton is history unless we Pay Da Man. Great schemes, better attitude.

5 - How sweet was that look of astonishment on Robert Kraft's face after the missed FG? hahahaha

6 - Too many guys contributed to name them all, but we may heave a real find in Massie. Go Cards!

if a penalty occurs after the end of the play
the penalty is assessed on the next possession

if penalties occur during the play
replay the down

key diff:

in the Clev / KC game, it wasnt fourth down for KC. So, with a penalty on the defense, one more play.

in this game, if there were a penalty for removing the helmet, it would have been post possession (i.e. the missed field goal) and still Cardinal ball after 15 yards were marched off.

I believe the players thought the game was over at that point, which explains their reactions. The refs had to pull them off the field because there was still one second on the clock. That's probably the reason why nothing was called.
