I never bought the "only a slot CB" argument since we had seen him play on the outside last year and in his rookie year.
Surprisingly, based on profootballreference.com, Dre was the Cardinals best CB based on Passer Rating allowed. Murphy was second best and Peterson was third. I think that Vance likes to play veterans more than young players.

Which is strange because Kirk seemed very Rondale Moore like his freshman year in college. He seemed more built like a RB. He traded ankle breaking moves and strength for downfield speed.

Maybe he wasn’t ready last year but the seasoning got him here. Kinda difficult to argue with the results of bringing him and Simmons along slowly. We know that worked. But we don’t know if exposing them earlier would’ve ruined their confidence or allowed them to fly.
