Wisconsin men's basketball had a pivotal stretch of games to start January.

The Badgers' loss to then-No. 6 Purdue was a (missed) Quad 1 opportunity, and the win against UCLA was a Quad 2 win. UW's 91-88 win over then-No. 1 Michigan gave the Badgers their first Quad 1 win of the season.

Now, the Badgers are in a stretch of the schedule where they are beating teams that they're supposed to beat. Wisconsin's last opponent, Rutgers, is No. 154 in the NCAA's NET rankings. UW's opponent before that, Minnesota, is No. 85 in NET. Penn State, UW's next opponent, is No. 114.

Those wins will not do much to move the needle either way for Wisconsin's postseason résumé, but here is a closer look at where the Badgers stand in the Big Ten and in March Madness projections:

Where is Wisconsin basketball in latest Big Ten standings?

Wisconsin's 5-2 conference record puts the Badgers in sixth place in the Big Ten, trailing Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Illinois. The two Big Ten teams to defeat the Badgers – Nebraska and Purdue – are a combined 14-1 in conference play.

Here are the full Big Ten standings, as listed on the conference website. (The Big Ten appears to list any ties in alphabetical order rather than in the order of the conference's tiebreakers.)

Where is Wisconsin in latest NET rankings?

Wisconsin is No. 39 in the NCAA's NET rankings after games completed on Jan. 20. That is one spot below where the Badgers were one week earlier.

The Badgers' next opportunity to knock off any of those teams will be Jan. 31 against the Buckeyes.

Here is UW's record against each NCAA-defined quadrant:

  • Quad 1: 1-5
  • Quad 2: 3-0
  • Quad 3: 3-0
  • Quad 4: 6-0

Wisconsin basketball March Madness predictions: Where Badgers are projected to land in bracket

ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi projected Wisconsin to be a No. 9 seed in his Jan. 20 bracket update. That is up from a No. 10 seed a week earlier. The Badgers would face eighth-seeded Georgia in the first round and most likely top-seeded Duke in the second round in the East region of Lunardi's bracket.

USA TODAY's Jan. 15 bracket projection also has the Badgers as a No. 9 seed. UW would hypothetically play eighth-seeded Saint Mary's in the first round and most likely top-seeded Duke in the second round in the South region of the bracket. The college basketball analytics site Bart Torvik projects the Badgers as a No. 9 seed as well, as of Jan. 21.
