Wisconsin men’s basketball keeps improving its NCAA Tournament resume ahead of Selection Sunday.
The Badgers’ latest quality win was on March 7 against Purdue – a team ranked No. 14 at the time in the USA TODAY coaches poll and currently is No. 10 in the NCAA’s NET rankings.
It was their eighth Quad 1 win of the season, tying how many they had ahead of last year’s Selection Sunday. (That could fluctuate, though, with opponents’ further movement in NET rankings.)
Wisconsin has a chance to further help its resume in the Big Ten Tournament. Its first game will be on March 12 against the winner of Washington and USC. A win there would pit the fifth-seeded Badgers against fourth-seeded Illinois.
Here is where Wisconsin stands in March Madness bracketology projections ahead of conference tournament play at the United Center in Chicago:
USA TODAY’s March 10 bracket projections have Wisconsin as a No. 5 seed. The Badgers would play South Florida, the projected American Conference champion, in the first round. They would then play either fourth-seeded Alabama or 13th-seeded High Point in Greenville, SC.
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi listed Wisconsin as a No. 6 seed in his bracket projections on the evening of March 9. The Badgers would play in St. Louis against either Santa Clara or SMU in the first round. They would then play either third-seeded Iowa State or 14th-seeded Wright State in the second round.
CBS Sports’ March 9 bracket update showed Wisconsin as a No. 6 seed playing against the winner of one of the First Four games. The Badgers would then face Iowa State in the second round.
Wisconsin is No. 26 in NET following college basketball games on March 9. That is up from No. 32 a week earlier.
Wisconsin has the seventh-highest NET ranking among Big Ten teams, trailing Michigan (No. 2), Illinois (No. 5), Purdue (No. 10), Michigan State (No. 11), Nebraska (No. 12) and Iowa (No. 25).
Here is Wisconsin’s quadrant-by-quadrant record:
Wisconsin’s first game in the Big Ten Tournament will be on March 12 against the winner of Washington and USC. Either possible opponent will count as a Quad 2 opportunity on a neutral site. (Washington is No. 61 in NET, and USC is No. 77.) With 31 games already on Wisconsin’s resume, the outcome of that game seems unlikely to move the needle in either direction.
UW’s quarterfinal foe would then be fourth-seeded Illinois, which would count as a Quad 1 game. A win there – or in any subsequent round – would have a greater chance at helping the Badgers’ case on Selection Sunday.
Predicting the NCAA Tournament field is ultimately just a prediction, however, and far from an exact science. The Badgers will have to wait until March 15 at 5 p.m. to see exactly where they will be in the 68-team tournament.
