Wisconsin's NCAA Tournament resume has been getting better.
The Badgers' recent 84-71 win over Iowa was their fifth Quad 1 win of the season. Seven of their eight losses are Quad 1 losses, and the one exception was at home against USC.
It is an encouraging development for a UW team that did not have any Quad 1 wins until the Jan. 10 upset over Michigan – the No. 1 team in the USA TODAY coaches poll at the time.
Here is a closer look at Wisconsin's place in the Big Ten standings and March Madness projections after the Iowa win and before UW's games against Oregon and Washington:
Wisconsin is sixth in the Big Ten with an 11-5 record. If the regular season ended now, it would be good enough to have a bye in the first two rounds of the Big Ten men's basketball tournament. UW would need to rise to the top four to have a bye in the first three rounds.
Full Big Ten standings (with ties listed alphabetically):
ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi has Wisconsin as a No. 7 seed in his Feb. 24 bracket projection. The Badgers would face 10th-seeded Texas in the first round in Oklahoma City, with second-seeded Houston likely awaiting the winner.
USA TODAY’s Feb. 24 bracketology update also projects the Badgers as a No. 7 seed in Oklahoma City. UW would face 10th-seeded SMU in the first round and presumably second-seeded Houston in the second round.
CBS Sports’ Feb. 24 bracket projection lists Wisconsin as a No. 6 seed. The Badgers would face 11th-seeded Miami (Ohio) in the first round and most likely third-seeded Gonzaga in the second round. (UC Irvine is the No. 14 seed in the projection.)
While not assigning a matchup, site or region, the college basketball analytics site Bart Torvik has the Badgers slotted as the last No. 6 seed in its Teamcast projections on Feb. 24.
Wisconsin is at No. 32 in the NCAA's NET rankings following college basketball games on Feb. 23. That is up from No. 33 a week earlier and No. 37 a month earlier.
Big Ten teams ahead of the Badgers in NET include Michigan at No. 1, Illinois at No. 4, Purdue at No. 6, Nebraska at No. 11, Michigan State at No. 12 and Iowa at No. 28. UW has wins over four of those six teams.
