Really never understood these ideas of trading proven players for lottery draft picks. It seems like every year there are people who want to do trades like this… crazy

im sorry man, I forget your from across the pond... Mike Wilson was drafted out of Stanford,...not Arkansas or Bama.
Dude will continue to work and earn for decades after he stops playing football.
Big difference between a college football factory and a (borderline) Ivy League Educational Institution.
This is "One day I'm going to sleep with Beyonce" level dreaming.
As things stand right now, Mike is getting $23-27m a year on the open market. Yes, the structure matters, but only in deciding who to go to within that range.
It's because he went to Stanford that he's smart enough not to sell his skills below the going rate.

I just want to be clear on how many people want to pay Mike $30m next year between all the snarky magic beans and not understanding why someone might consider this option.
How many think this team is in position to pay it's 2nd receiving option, and likely it's 3rd receiving option, $30m a year? That's what he is getting, there's no magic cheap home discount deal.

He is married to one of the top soccer players in the world, they share a home in the Bay area and split time in Portland and Phoenix. Sophia is the first player in the NSWL to make a $1 million for a season. If we do not extend him, I see him leaving and signing with the 49ers to be closer to his family since there is not way we franchise him at nearly $30 million next year. Extend him. I do not see him signing an extension with anyone he is traded to if it takes him further from home, the kid loves his family, which includes a baby at home.

if we had a legit chance of making the playoffs next year, I wouldn’t consider it. But I just don’t see Monty paying $30M per year to keep him so we will essentially let him walk for nothing in a lost season. Cincinnati is the poster child for why you shouldn’t pay 2 WR’s top money.

A smart team would cash in now and get a 2027 2nd round pick that they can use to draft a QB. Chances are, we will need more than whatever we have in the draft to get the QB we want.
And I say this as a big fan of Mike.

A smart team wouldn't offload offensive weapons when they just hired an offensive head coach. A smart team would be trying to take advantage of them rather than trading for future magic beans.
Why? MHJ was on track to have two 900 yard seasons. I love Mike, but everyone here thought he was a WR3/4 until every other receiver got injured, we had no run game and we had to throw him the ball 18 times a game.
I wouldn't bank on that happening again.

no chance they'd get a 2nd round pick for Wilson. Pittman was much more accomplished, and they swapped late round picks for him.
It's really easy to say. So what are you doing next year?
The seasons over. We go 5-12. We're picking 6th. Cards had a running game again so we don't throw it 45x a game, and MHJ and Trey were healthy. So Mike has a respectable 900 yards. The market is set at $28-30m and he's FA. The transition tag is $27m. We really wish we had some more draft capital to move up into the top 2 to get a QB but we let that ship sail. But hey, you got to watch Mike get 900 yards in a losing season before he left.
So, what exactly is your plan next year?
Pittman was already on a fat deal and is 29 this year, he also only has one year left on that deal. The last 2 years he's had 808 and 784 yards despite playing practically every game. He's declining.
Mike is ascending. You would get the equivalent of a mid to late 2nd in pick value.

With the breakout performance by Wilson and expected breakout of MHJ..we could be set at WR #1 and 2.
And Trey at TE!
I say keep Brissett at the helm and stack the Oline, then worry about QB next year. Or maybe move up to grab Simpson with our #2 pick.
But don’t mess with a WR core that looks promising.

IMO, you are looking at this backwards.
Over the past two seasons Michael Wilson has been more productive (1554 yards vs 1493 yards) and played in more games 33 vs 29. Right now, Wilson has been the better WR. Pay him. If MHJ grows and plays well...then you pay him as well but that is a decision a year from now.
And there is no reason to cry about money because the Cardinals don't have many long term contracts they are having to work around. It's pretty much Sweat and McBride.
