The North Carolina Tar Heels' basketball program is navigating through the 2025-26 season as Hubert Davis looks to get back on track. However, a big storyline that is emerging is the future of the Dean E. Smith Center.

The future of the arena is in question as the university has begun preliminary work on relocating and building a new arena off campus at the Carolina North site. That location is at the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Estes Drive in Chapel Hill, where Horace Williams Airport was located before its closure in May 2018.

However, renovating the Dean Dome isn't out of the question either and former players as well as former coach Roy Williams is speaking out for that option. Williams released a video on Monday night supporting the renovation of the Dean E. Smith Center. It's a place where Williams won 85.6% of his games in and was on the floor when it opened as an assistant.

Williams opens up the two-minute video by saying he's in favor of the program staying in the Smith Center whether it's a renovation or whatever the program needs to do. He makes it clear that he doesn't want to go off campus.

He then states his relationship with the late Dean Smith and how he wants this arena to be on campus. Williams had a very close relationship with Smith up until his passing.

The Smith Center has had plenty of legendary moments since it opened in 1986. However, it does have its faults as well as a renovation would be needed to take care of that. Williams has now made a strong statement on his hopes for the arena.

Now, the hope is that the administration hears him out.
