The Pittsburgh Pirates have reportedly traded away veteran left-hander Joe La Sorsa.

MLB insider Ari Alexander first reported on Thursday evening that Pittsburgh has dealt left-handed reliever Joe La Sorsa to the Boston Red Sox. He’s also set to be in New York and on the 26-man active roster for Boston on Friday.

Boston Globe’s Alex Spier, meanwhile, confirmed the trade and revealed Pittsburgh is acquiring cash considerations in return.

The reported trade comes just days after La Sorsa triggered his upward mobility clause in his minor league deal, which means a player must be offered to the 29 other teams in the league. If any of them want to give the player a roster spot, the signing team has to either trade him or give him a roster spot themselves.

The Red Sox obviously showed interest in the veteran left-hander, which led to the Pirates reportedly trading the veteran. La Sorsa triggered the clause at the end of spring training, but no team wanted him on the active roster, which is why he remained in Triple-A.

La Sorsa has appeared in 46 career games out of the bullpen and is 1-1 with a 5.21 ERA. He made his MLB debut in 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays for two games before appearing in 23 with the Washington Nationals.

He spent the 2024 season in Washington’s organization, appearing in 14 games, before signing with the Cincinnati Reds in 2025 and appearing in just five big league games.

La Sorsa signed a minor league deal with the Pirates in November but was never called up to the MLB team.
