Here is the thing, IMO, he should have gotten a long suspension, but I have to applaud the Oregon Program, who is keeping him on Scholorship, practicing with the team, getting help from school counselours on his anger problems, and doing whatever they can to help the young man use this as a growing expierance...

When I heard suspended for the season, I thought "dismissed from the team"...

I think it is an appropriate punishment all in all...

That is not to say Hout is not without blame, what he did was classless, and what Blount did by punching him was disgusting, but IF it ended at that, it would be one thing, but it continued with teammates fans and security guards, IMO, THAT is the reason he got suspended for the season, not the punch...

Blount didn't get punished enough, he shoulda faced assault charges imo.

Actually Hout put his hands on Blount first. Blount can easily argue he was defending himself....but he can't claim defense for his actions after the punch lol.

And on a side note, for those who are convinced Hout said something horrific, after the game Blount admitted he didn't hear what Hout was saying and was just pissed that he tapped him on the shoulder pads... It was a classless move by Hout, but I don't know what he said, and apparently neither does Blount...:D

In no way shape or form could that be considered self defense. AT ALL!

I've seen way worse at the local hockey rink. And the funny thing is, both guys would probably be drinking beer together at the end of the night.

Hout's coach grabbed him and began reprimanding him right before Blount came in with his punch.

Personally, I think nothing much would have happened if Blount had pushed Hout back with a hand to his pads.

A shoving match is not as bad as a sucker punch.

Eh, I think its kinda funny that the BSU player tried to taunt and talk junk and actually put his hands on the Oregon back only to get cold-cocked and dropped by a straight right to the chin. I'm not saying the Oregon player was in the right or anything and I agree with the suspension he recieved. In fact I think both guys basically got what they deserved.

Holt deserves at least a few game suspension. This is college ball and they are suppose to be student/athletes. There is no room for the taunting and BS like that in college ball. It's suppose to be about competition not trash talking.

If Hout doesn't touch his pads, he does nothing wrong. Even still, the tap to the pads is pretty much nothing. It is crystal clear that Blount was fuming from the game and just needed a tiny excuse to snap. Blount was wrong to touch the pads, but not wrong to say what he did. Blount was acting bad-ass in the preseason talking about ass whoopings. He should have swallowed it when it was given back to him. Don't smack talk if you don't want it to backfire on you.

On top of that, we aren't discussing just the punch when we discuss Blount's suspension. He also punched a teammate, flipped out, and had to be restrained by the police for an extended period of time. As some sportscasters have said, he could have been arrested and maybe should have been arrested.

Look, I understand the manly tradition of not letting another man touch you like that, and I very much lament the wussification of society. I am firmly of the 'fight it out then buy each other a beer' mentality, and think it would keep a lot of heavier violence out of society. Still, that's not what we have today, and hothead or no, bad game or no, Blount should have realized that and acted accordingly.

That's a pretty reasonable take. I'll go along with that.

Bull! Taunting and shittalk is a part of football. Always has been always will. Doesn't warrant a sucker punch. At all!

Bingo. Do people realize how much trash talk is said after the game when it looks like they are all friendly and just shaking hands. It wasn't the first time that dude heard trash talk at the end of the game and if he plays at the next level next year it wont be his last.

Blount is a punk pure and simple. Told he media they were going to kick their Ass and he wondered why he was getting trashed talked after the game?

Wow. Really? You tell your kids it is all right to taunt their opponents after games? If it is 'part of the game' then why is taunting a penalty at every level of football? Because it leads to incidents like we saw last night, that's why.

I coach kids sports and I teach my players to respect their opponents and the officials, but most of all to respect the game, something Hout failed to do. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.

Blount deserves his punishment, but Hout deserves punishment as well.
Totally agee with you. Sure its okay to talk some smack inbetween the whistles but after the game is really classless...That'd be like Bears fans taunting us after the Monday night game while we were leaving the stadium (hate to bring up that moment still)

After the game you should just say "good game" and head to the locker room.

Tapping someone on the shoulder isn't exactly grounds for defending your self. Especially when Blount clearly saw who did it, saw him turn his head around , then decided to throw a sucker punch when the guy wasn't even looking, all the while he still had his own helmet on, then back pedaled away like a chump, then proceed to throw a punch at his own teammate trying to make him calm down.

Thats punk status, not I was defending myself or because he was trash talking, trash talk he has heard a million times before after a game I might add.

What a mess. Blount talked trash, and he got some of it back. Before anything else, this falls into the "can dish it out but can't take it" category. He could have given Hout a shove and we'd barely be talking about it. But the subsequent flipping out...that was really embarrassing for the school, so action is expected. What I hope happens is he takes responsibility for it, and his suspension is subsequently lessened. But I think Hout should have been suspended by Boise for at least a game, if for no other reason than to diffuse things.

I was reading the comments on the Yahoo article about the suspension, and the discussion degenereated into all-out racism on both sides. Some of the most despicable comments I've ever read.

Pretty classy and responsible move by Oregon. They could have suspended him 5 or 6 games and "most" people would have been satisfied.

Where in there did I say I teach my kids to talk smack? Many on here can attest exactly what my kids are like and how they behave.

What I said very clearly is that taunting is apart of sports and always will be. That won't change. My kids are and will be taught to ignore it. However the punch was completely unwarranted no matter how you slice it. Way to turn this into issues with my parental integrity.

You said that you had no problem with what Hout did, so I assume you would have no problem with your kids doing the same thing.

BTW, don't deflect the argument. This thread is about Hout and if he should be punished for his actions. Everyone on here has agreed that Blount got what he deserved.

I agree with the dish it out and can't take it

if you talk crap outside the lines, expect to hear crap outside the lines ....... magnify that if you don't show up

guy spent all offseason talking about this one, they were going to go in there and beat up on boise ..... well, they got slapped around pretty well and he had a crap game

so not only did they not deliver on his words - he just didn't show up

he was pissed about that - no doubt

with that though, you need to man up and take what you have coming to you - whenever you put anything on the line there's a chance you can lose and when you do lose you have to face the consequences

there is a wide difference between talk and throwing - if blount just pushed him away and/or went yelling after him this would be a much different story

hout was getting reprimanded by his coaches and was going to get his actions corrected either way - just because the other guy blows up and makes the situation more severe doesn't mean you necessarily ratchet up the discipline of your player

no coach is going to levy a hefty penalty to a guy talking after a game - at most a game, maybe a half - but in reality probably a really crappy week of practice and some extra work around the facility

that punishment will stand

blount had the control of his own punishment - it could of been the same as hout, or it could of been less if he just shook it off - but me made a year for himself

This is a great take. At what point is it acceptable to no longer practice sportsmanship? I don't buy the "part of the game" argument for one minute. There are still people who play sports the right way, the way we all were taught as kids... like not showing up another player.

Football is one of the sports where the players no longer have an opportunity to keep other players in check on the playing field. In baseball, you can expect a fastball in the back if you want to show somebody up. In hockey, you can expect a hard check in the boards or a fight.

I would argue football is the one sport where you can keep other players in check on EVERY play of the game.
