ATHENS, Ohio (WMBD/WYZZ) — Jackson Paveletzke scored 19 points and added six assists to lead host Ohio past Illinois State, 72-68, in the season opener for both teams.
Ohio ran out to an 18-7 lead but the Redbirds clawed back to tie the game at 31 at halftime. A Boden Skunberg three-pointer 30 seconds into the second half gave ISU its first lead of the game, and the Birds jumped out quickly out of the second-half gate, using a 10-2 run to stretch its lead to eight at 41-33.
The Bobcats would re-take the lead thanks to a 13-0 run and would never give the lead up. Skunberg scored 15 points and had seven rebounds in his Redbird debut.
Johnny Kinziger also scored 15 and Ty Pence added 14 for ISU, which plays its home opener Sunday against Cornell. Chase Walker was in foul trouble most of the game and scored only seven points in 19 minutes of action.
