Supporters and donors Todd and Michelle Hein were honored at the Indiana State University Athletic Department's sixth annual Tried and True Gala on Friday night.
The couple received the Max and Jackie Gibson Award, given to supporters making a significant impact on Sycamore athletics via service or philanthropic giving.
More than 200 people attended the event at Hulman Center. Among the guest speakers was former ISU basketball standout Jayson Kent, now in the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers system.
The Heins were lauded also by ISU President Mike Godard and Athletic Director Nathan Christensen, family, friends and community members.
"Todd and Michelle have never treated Indiana State as an institution they simply support from a distance, but they have taken an active, personal role in our success," Godard said, according to an ISU news release. "Their financial generosity has been significant, but their greatest impact is found in relationships. They have invested not merely in an athletics department, but in people."
Christensen cited the Heins' work in helping launch the Crossroad of Champions initiative to generate funds for student-athletes' name-image-likeness compensation (NIL).
A tribute video highlighted the Heins' efforts.
"It has been an absolute pleasure and a highlight of our lives to support Indiana State," Todd Hein said. "From the relationships that we have built, to the coaching staffs and players embracing our family and our son Jacob, this place has been truly special. We excited to be here, and as long as we're here, we're going to support it."
Track and field
• Sycamore competes in Oregon — Fresh off his first season at Indiana State, Sycamore Kieran Barnewall competed Friday at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships at Eugene, Ore., and placed fourth in his 110-meter hurdles heat.
Representing Team Canada, Barnewall missed advancing to the semifinals by just one placing. Barnewall qualified for the meet by winning the Canadian title in 13.66 seconds.
At Eugene, he ran a 13.87-second race, trailing leader Zacchaeus Brocks of the United States, Taj-Oneil Gordon of Jamaica in second and Hristiyan Kasabov of Bulgaria in third.
The overall winner in Saturday's 110 hurdles finals was American Le'Ezra Brown with a 12.72-second run.
Prep girls golf
• Southmont 193, Terre Haute North 227 — At Hulman Links, Gabby Scamihorn fired a 50 to lead the host Patriots, but the Mounties scored the team victory Monday afternoon.
Other North stroke totals were Keylin Harmon with a 58, Alli Thomas 59, Hannah Mottesheard and Sophia Flak with 60s, Mackynzie Biddy 61 and Lily Silvers 72.
Coach Abby Abel's Patriots next play 4:30 p.m Thursday at South Vermillion.
College men's golf
• Engineers cited for academics — Rose-Hulman's men's golf team has claimed the 2025-26 Golf Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award, as a result of finishing 2025-26 as one of 62 college teams with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Along with the team honor, Ryan Beerheide, Owen King, Austin Frick and Nate Benson each received Cobalt Golf Scholar All-American honors. All four athletes participated in at least 50% of their team's competitive rounds, while recording an average score of under 79.0 and a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
The Engineers open the '26-27 season Sept. 5-6 at the Transylvania Invitational.
College men's soccer
• SMWC tabbed fourth — A preseason poll of River States Conference coaches predicts Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will finish fourth in the upcoming 2026 season.
Coach Ron Kiernicki's Pomeroys finished with records of 7-10-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the RSC last season, reaching the conference quarterfinals and hosting a postseason match for the first time in school history.
In this year's preseason poll released Tuesday, SMWC got 29 points in voting by the conference’s head coaches, trailing leader West Virginia Tech with 49 points and seven of the eight first-place votes; Rio Grande with 43 points and the remaining first-place vote and Midway with 35 points.
SMWC opens the 2026 campaign Aug. 21 against Goshen College at new McMahon Field.
