NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Johnny Kinziger scored 21 points to lead Illinois State to an 86-64 win over Valparaiso at CEFCU Arena on Thursday night.
The Redbirds scored 52 points in the second half and returned to the win column after a Monday loss to Evansville, the team at the bottom of the Missouri Valley Conference standings. Freshman Ty’Reek Coleman came off the bench to score 14 points and grab five rebounds for the Redbirds (17-9, 9-6).
The Redbirds had a 14-0 run in the second half and outscored the Beacons 32-12 in the game’s final 12 minutes. Kinziger made 7-of-15 shots from the floor in earning his season-high total of 21 points.
“It feels good to see a couple shots go in. But my main role is to be a captain, a leader of this team,” Kinziger said. “No matter if the ball is going in or not, I’m just trying to do that to the best of my ability.”
ISU center Chase Walker scored 11 points and played only six minutes of action. Redbird coach Ryan Pedon said Walker suffered a hamstring injury in the first half.
Even without Walker’s presence, ISU outscored Valpo, 42-24, in the paint.
“I thought every guy that contributed tonight really played a very important role, and I think this was a very important victory for us tonight,” Pedon said.
The Redbirds play at UIC on Sunday.
