NEW YORK — A.J. Ewing has provided a major spark since he assumed a role in the leadoff spot for the Mets' lineup over the last two weeks.

The 21-year-old rookie has broken out this series against the Royals, supplying six hits, including two home runs, four RBI and five runs in the first two games.

He opened the scoring on Wednesday night and added a double in the Mets' 6-2 victory. Now, with Ewing at the top, the Mets offense, which has scored an average of 8.75 runs per game over their last four, will look to keep plugging ahead in the series finale at 1:10 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field.

The Mets will be leaning on Sean Manaea to correct course after he allowed six runs (three earned) in five innings with four strikeouts last time out against the Braves. He enters Thursday with a 1-4 record and 4.76 ERA in 19 games, including five starts.

Michael Wacha will be making his 19th start for the Royals. He carries a 5-6 record, 3.45 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 114⅔ innings. Wacha will be representing the Royals at the All-Star Game in his second appearance in the Midsummer Classic next week.
