NEW YORK — Carlos Mendoza is hoping that Friday's roller-coaster of a victory can get the Mets back on track.
The Mets opened up a four-run lead over the Marlins in the opening inning but saw that shrivel until the gap was completely closed with an eighth-inning two-run home run by Kyle Stowers.
But the Mets did not let it fully slip and MJ Melendez delivered the first walk-off hit of his career - a two-run shot into the second deck in right field - as they grabbed a narrow 9-7 victory.
Now, the Mets carry back-to-back wins and hold an opportunity to secure a series win over the Marlins at 4:10 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field.
"Those are the games that kind of get you back on track," Mendoza said Saturday. "It's been hard for us. Two tough stretches. We're not in a good position, not a secret, but we still have a very good opportunity in front of us."
Christian Scott will be on the mound for the Mets to try and keep that momentum going. Scott is still seeking his first win of his career. He enters with a 0-0 record, 3.20 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in six starts, including last week when he held the Marlins scoreless across 5⅔ innings.
The Marlins will counter with a long reliever making his second start in Tyler Phillips. The right-hander is 0-0 with a 1.07 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and held the Mets without a run in 3⅔ innings last weekend.
It is also a momentous day in Flushing as Bobby Valentine and Lee Mazzilli will be enshrined in the Mets Hall of Fame.
